The E39 M5 is the Modern Classic to Own - Hagerty

Great video from Hagerty that not only explains why this car is excellent from a driver's standpoint but also from owners. Not to mention, still incredibly gorgeous two decades later.

Great timing on this post (for me). I just made a deal to purchase an E39 M5 this morning! This is the M that got me hooked originally back in college but never owned one.

Lucky you! Enjoy the new M5. I can see why you were tempted. Four doors, manual, V8, great handling and its beautiful. A pretty much non-existant package these days.

I certainly like the performance of the E39 with it's S62 V8, but I always liked the E34 styling a little better. It was slightly boxier and looked a little more business like.

agree on all points. if i'm not mistaken, the E34 was the last model (of any BMW series) produced with that classic BMW grill styling -- and that will always be my favorite.

but i'd certainly be thrilled to own an E39 M5.

Agreed, and I think it ages better. When I had my e34 I'd ask unsuspecting people to guess it's age and 90%+ put it at e39-era. Newest I got was 2006.

Wished I was able to keep my E34 M5 touring. Gone but not forgotten. They are slowly trickling in but with a premium. I like E39 M5 but never in market and if I am they are increasingly hard to get in decent shape.

Awesome choice! I would get one but the ones I find are too beat up and haven't had the best of care. Enjoy it in good health . What a car.

A good friend of mine currently has three M5 Tourings for sale. I have attached the link for reference.

Thanks for your contribution Hagerty. What other valuable insights do you have?

Leo Messi is really good at football?
Margot Robbie is hot?

You know... some would say that the G30 5 series is a superior car in just about every way...

Amazing how bloated the current 5-series appears next to the E39. I feel the E60 was the right size, after that this car turned into a boat.

I love those LA canyons he's at. I just carved some corners up in Malibu today. It's pure bliss.

The E39 is just such a beauty. Ever since its inception it has just been the perfect amount of elegance mixed with sport and clean design language. A gold standard for me. My dream M5 spec forever has been a classy Green such as Oxford Green, of course over the beautiful Caramel Leather.

Congrats man. I’ll never sell mine. Why would I? It only has 65k miles and gives me everything a new car would and has that analog feel you can’t get today. It’s the pinnacle of BMW and the best sports sedan ever built IMO.
