Good that you could add the storage. I can't believe that BMW thinks that the removal of this practical storage is an acceptable cost cutting.
It seams clear that there is no other reason, like new equipment that needed the space (unless the i4 is different). I use mine every day.

Added mine in as well! A dremel, some sandpaper, a marker, the parts and about an hour was all it took. Results below:

There is a slight color mismatch between the part and my dash, but it's barely noticeable since the compartment is so low and tucked away and not a whole lot of bright light in that area. If anybody is thinking about doing this but on the fence and has any questions I'd be happy to help. It's pretty straightforward once you get past the anxiety of cutting into your dash
