Help choosing which camera!

So, about a month ago, I was on the brink of purchasing a used nikon d40 for 325, but it fell through, as did the other deals I found after. I have found several other d40s all in the range of 375-425, however I've been considering just forking out the extra cash for something else. Taking into account the 1k in extra money I have set aside for photography purposes, I'm considering just going all out for the D90. I found a used one, with 2,092 actuations, with the 18-105 kit lens, for 975. Should I jump all over this, or just settle for the d40?

I would go for the D90. You could start out with a D40 but once you become better you will wish that you had a more advance camera. My rule of thumb is always to get the model with more bells and whistles than you think you need. That way you can grow into it rather than having to sell and buy a new camera.

Look up the camera at Walmart/Sears and see if they carry it. You can get 20% back at Sears I believe (essentially about 11% back since you have to pay tax). I don't know that much about Nikon so I can't comment on whether that's a good price or whether that's a good lens or not. I'm sure others will chime in though.

you are not considering Canon?

I used to have a D40x and loved it, but I must agree.. its a great camera to start.. but once you learn more about photography.. you'd wish you have a higher end camera.

If you find a good deal on D90, go for it..

or go for a Canon ^^

I jumped ship from Nikon to Canon.. :P

and +1.. for $975.. I'd get a brand new D90....

Unless you can talk it down more to around $850 or so...

Camera depreciates rather quickly.. its the lens that matters.

Cannon xsi or tl1 are pretty good for the price ..

I bought an xsi just came in today 529 shipped with kit lense brand new. With the
money you save you can buy a better lense.

You'll want to invest more in lenses, so I would start out with an average body. The problem with low end Nikons is the lack of a built-in AF motor in the body.
I suggest a Canon XSi, which I got last month.
