Anybody tempted by a 330e?

My next car might have to be a hybrid, depending on the outcome of some 'domestic' conversations.

The 330e looks like a plausible option. Anyone tempted to get one? Are they available to drive yet?

I'm liking the look of the boosted power output compared with the F30 hybrid, and what looks like a KERS system. Any thoughts?

G20 330e not released in the UK yet, I don't think it's a radical step over the outgoing F chassis version in terms of electrical range and power though.

That's looking like a 'no', then. Had another domestic conversation and am getting an M140i. Happy days!

I definitely would be, but only in touring format if they do one. Electric range will be double current car, which will make a pretty decent improvement, and allow most local journeys and weekend use to be pure electric.

The way company car BIK rates look now I think PHEVs are the only sensible option. Any typical 2 litre diesel compact exec option is now around a £400 per month tax liability for a higher rate tax payer.

I agree that range is key. We regularly drive to Germany, so careful journey planning will still be needed, though.

Why? It's a hybrid, so you can refuel like a normal car. We use our current 330e quite happily for long journeys to Scotland.

Alright,

I've lived with a F30 330e now for 3 years as a company car. As a company car it makes sense, but I don't think the benefits are good enough for private ownership.

You need to make some sacrifices - boot space, tiny fuel tank, bad MPG when driving motorway, you can feel the battery weight in corners, the instant torque can make the car wheel spin at the lightest throttle at junctions in the wet or when roads are greasy.

I did over 50k miles in mine on long journeys and only got around 34mpg (my S3 8V does 40mpg on the same journeys at same pace).

If the configurator is anything to go by, you can't get the car without run flats and it has no M Sport Diff (haven't had that confirmed but looks that way)

I have ordered a G20 330i and will be happy to pay the extra £180 ish a month on company car tax to enjoy driving again.

If it's private purchase, do the 330i or 330d IMO.

I'm going to have a redundant charging point outside my house now, but hey!

It's just that small tank that drives me up the wall, I regularly drive from central belt (between Edinburgh & Glasgow) to Inverness, Aberdeen, Moray and even Orkney recently. Mine would have to be driven VERY carefully to hit 300 miles out a tank even with a full charge.

A small tank, extra weight and poor mpg on a long-distance run don't sound very attractive.

Its a pain, fortunately mine was a company car. If I had my own money in hand I’d have a 330d or hopefully they’ll release a 335d in the G20? My bro has a F30 335d X Drive M Sport and it’s decent on fuel and quick.

My wife does a 110 mile round commute in ours and we are averaging 45mpg, with just charging in the evening, and even last week going from oxford to Perth we did 40mpg, so your consumption sounds high to me. Not disputing it, and I guess we all have different driving styles.

The small tank is a right pain though!

We were looking at the new E300de from Mercedes, which has a 2litre Diesel engine and a 64 litre tank along with 30miles from the batteries... range in that could be 800miles!

That would be annoying I can get over 800 miles on a run in my diesel, I think a diesel hybrid would make sense with a DPF/Adblue and 40 odd miles on electric it would be very efficient and "clean"

Yeah, that would be good, they'd have to get it below 50g of Co2 to get the great company car tax.

Mercedes have the Eclass estate diesel hybrid available now. We had a look at them last week but decided it's just too big. The C class will have the same drivetrain shortly too. 30 miles electric range, 300bhp, though a bit lardy.... an ideal car for us to have alongside the M4 in our household. I'd have thought that a genuine 70-80 mpg would be possible.

The E class also still has a proper sized fuel tank so you'd possibly get 1000 miles from a tank!

One of the guys in the company has the first c350e, not AMG line. Think he has the same complaints as my F30 330e, mostly small tank and rubbish mpg. Maybe the new 330e and C350e will give you the MPG you need. My 330e has put me right off hybrids for at 3 years (until my company car is renewed).

I'm happy with the mpg we get from our 330e though, typically 43-45mpg from most tanks. The range is the one thing I'd really want to improve, but seems that needs the larger cars to do, or this diesel option.

Contemplating it...

Have to say, I’m tempted.

Waiting on confirmation from BMW but the website indicates non-RFT versions will do 41 (via WLTP) which puts it into 8% BIK for 2020/21, basically around £120/month tax for a 40% tax payer (vs. £400-500 for a 330i). So all up from my fleet company I can get a circa £45k car for under £500/month “all in” whether standard M Sport or M Sport Plus. No way you can get that with a private purchase.

Range on the new version is meant to be 15-20 miles more than the old one, new version of the 2.0i turbo engine will be more fuel efficient, car weighs less.

Most of the time I just potter around these days, even on the motorway sitting in the inside lane. If I want to boot it then 290 BHP is more effective than a Prius :-)

Let’s face it, we’re at the start of the electric car revolution and V2 is going to be far from perfect but pending a drive in a 320d to check out suspension/wheel options/comfort I think I’m going to give it a try.

Will just have to order a roof box... ;-)

I have ordered one as my next company car

I currently drive Mondeo Hybrid (non-plug-in) which gives me... like 1-2 miles fully electric range and around 40 mpg with my daily commute (5 miles, mostly cold engine).

full tank gives like 350 - up to 400+ miles (max 45 litres in the tank). But it produces 180 bhp and is not the most agile car whatsoever.

If I would get much better range in electric only and at least similar range/mpg from the tank but with the availability of much more power and performance - I would be really happy man

Yeah, I ran a Merc 300h a few years back, kind of similar but with a diesel engine instead. I used to get low-mid 50's average and into high 60's on a long trip, fairly decent for something with 230BHP. Was terribly unreliably though, went through 2 hybrid batteries in <20k miles and lots of other things broke. I wouldn't buy another one...

Funnily I've also got a Mondeo at the moment as a private car, albeit the twin-turbo diesel (210BHP) version. I actually quite like it, looks very sharp (19" wheels, bodykit with blacked out grill, LED lights), quick enough, quiet, v comfortable, loads of space, bit plasticky inside and the adaptive cruise is poor. I get low-mid-50's out of that but have a 45 mile commute each way, mostly up/down the M4 pootling along in the inside lane. Again on a long motorway drive I can get into the low-mid-60's, quite impressive really for the size/performance combo. As a package it's not as far behind the German's as many people might think...

330e sounds ideal for your daily drive, should be near 100% electric. Maybe you will get 130MPG! :-) I'm assuming that I'd get about 25-30 miles on electric which should give a decent enough average MPG but for long journey's it will be lower than my Mondeo.

Turns out only the 330e SE on 17" wheels falls into the 8% BIK group, all others are 12% for 2020/21.

Do you have a delivery date and what spec did you go for?

No delivery date yet - still waiting for the final confirmation, but I presume September/October latest - my Mondeo lease expires 14/10 so would be perfect timing
