563-horsepower Infiniti Q60 Black S prototype bound for Paris auto show
https://www.motorauthority.com/news/...aris-auto-show
I'm posting this here rather than in the non-BMW automotive forum because, although this is still not a production car, it does present an interesting direction for a potential entry into the class of vehicle occupied by the M4 (and theoretically the M3 too, if Infiniti were to apply the same drivetrain/chassis to the Q50 along with the Q60). As a potential product in the 2020 timeframe, this vehicle would compete directly with the next generation M4, C63 coupe, and eventually, RS5. |

i wonder if they just had a bunch of left over q50 eau rouge parts from a few years back that they never sold / released to bolt on to the same FM platform they haven't revised since 05.
"hey guys, we need to put a car at the paris motor show, what do you have left over?" "well we have the eau rouge concept parts... and the idx we'll never sell... whcih one do you want us to send to paris?" |

Infiniti has been teasing concepts and prototypes for many years, including rumors of a GT-R sedan bearing the Infiniti badge that finally surfaced as the Eau Rouge prototype (never made it to production).
I've always felt like it was a bit of a wasted/missed opportunity that Infiniti's parent company Nissan didn't allow the Infiniti brand to reap the benefits of the GT-R's development. It was not until very recently, that the GT-R's engine family (VR) yielded spin-offs/variants that were accorded to Infiniti vehicles. And one can presume that part of this decision was due to stricter emissions regulations and a general movement towards forced-induction. Nissan had good potential with the FM (Front Midship) Platform in the 2000s (350/370Z, G35/37, etc.) that were RWD, 6-cylinders, and available with manual transmissions. They were far from perfect, but the concept of RWD, manual transmission, and respectable horsepower was a generally positive direction for performance brand-building and could've been perfected in subsequent generations. But they failed to capitalize on what could've yielded some very good "premium" performance sports sedans might've given the IS-F, E9x M3, E60 M5, etc. a run for their money. Instead, they went for the "halo" image, where the GT-R has a strong following, but at the expense for the rest of the Nissan/Infiniti lineup. Now we have a situation where Nissan's lineup reflects the aging R&D from a decade ago and the Infiniti brand has fallen way behind Lexus, let alone BMW, Audi, and MB. Within Nissan's management, better support & resource allocation could've been given to the Infiniti brand such that it could be more competitive against European marques.

Very thorough response, Law. I agree with your analysis.
I would add that the Eau Rouge died with De Nysschen’s departure. Had he stayed (or been allowed to stay depending on how you read that situation) I think the car would have become a reality. Although, I am not saying they didn’t have a challenge on their hands with how to properly position it against what would have been it’s natural marketplace competitors and fitting that in with the where the GTR sits price-wise. However, it’s the engine tech that makes this more recent project interesting. At some point, even with turbocharging you run out of room to make more power with 3L being the new norm for six cylinder engines. So electric assist figures to come into play more heavily next decade. Mercedes, for example, appears to be cooking something up with their M256 for the next generation AMG C63 (or “C63”, if the name will change with the drop in cylinders). This hybrid setup could be the answer for Infiniti to the extent that they plan to revive their performance pedigree. They do need to put some money into vehicle arch and chassis development, no doubt. I think the impending move toward electric has made for a degree of hesitation across the industry. Do we make do with what we’ve got for the ICE side, and put the lion share of R&D into our version of the “skateboard”? Or do we need to invest to keep the combustion cars competitive for the last couple decades of their life? |

This car looks cool.
I like Nissan and Nismo, has a Nissan Juke that I really liked and wanted to dress up, mod like I saw in pictures, but it was essentially impossible since no one around here could do it / had any idea about anything to do with a juke.I didn’t try particularly hard, but moving in the Midwest does limit you a bit. And then they discontinued the car lol. So, I got rid of it. I know a lot of people hated the juke but I dug it. I don’t understand why Japanese auto manufacturers do not give their cars more power. Drives me nuts, because I really like Japanese cars but they are all on the whole, underpowered. This particular Infinity looks to rectify that, but it’s a one off. I will say my short time in the one infinity I rode in left me unimpressed. The build quality was lacking. Lots of rattles and everything felt cheap. This was quite awhile ago, perhaps changed since then. Definitely didn’t seem worth a premium to Nissan to me at the time. It was a coupe, don’t remember the model, haven’t looked at infinity since. Wasn’t particularly fast. I would definitely check this car out, if they ever made it. Just to see what a 500hp Japanese coupe feels like. I don’t understand why the Japanese don’t go toe to toe with the Germans in the American market, hp for hp. If the Supra sales are good, which they seem to be, you’d think they would go for it. I can’t even find one locally. |

People had probably forgotten about them, until you brought back this 4 year old thread, from the dead.
