Modern engine normally consumers a certain amount of engine oil. This is necessary to lubricate the cylinder walls, piston, piston rings, turbos. Additional oil consumed in a turbocharged engine is mainly due to the heavy turbo lubrication requirements. I realize a lot of you guys first instinct is to run to the dealer and why not, it's free and it seems like the smart thing to do but it's honestly waste of time unless the vehicle is generating a fault code or telltale sounds of piston knocking. BMW standards for oil burning is a quart every 750 miles (1207klm) or else they won't do a thing but top it off and send you on your way. However, it's your time, use it how you like. Best of luck. |

This is where my issue is, at 4450mi they drained and measured the oil and it was actually over filled from having it topped off the previous times I got the "oil at minimum level" warning.
They did an oil change, and told me to come back when the car issued the "oil at minimum level", which is what it has now done again for the 3rd time. Given that when it previously happened and they actually drained to measure and it was over filled is pointing to a sensor issue. |

It is pretty surprising to hear that the sensor issue is still on going but it is also good to hear that your car is not burning any oil. GL and keep us posted.

The dealer can pad a bill to BMW and change the oil sensors until the cows come home, it's not going to stop the vehicle from naturally burning oil. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...ensor/H74mIjTZ |

It's possible yours might of been an isolated case with the bad sensor but in my experience, with a bad oil level sensor, the oil reading is just incomplete, not overstated. The overfill oil reserve can explain by an overzealous tech who added too much oil before measuring the current level. God, how I miss a manual dipstick However, this oil burning issue is common amongst the B58 motor. As you see, it's a very common occurrence amongst a lot of owners. That can't just be a coincidence and had it been a mass defect or correctable via the a sensor, BMW would of addressed it by now. BMW's service bulletin on the B58: |

I got the low oil warning at 3300 miles. I live only 5 miles from my office so the car hardly warms up during my commute. So I suspect my problem is the result of pushing the car before its fully warmed up. I'm wondering if anyone else might be in the same category.

Doubt it, my commute is 42 miles round-trip five days a week and mine needed a quart at just over 3k. It's the engine/ factory oil the issue. I haven't even done launch control in this car so you could say I drive it tame considering its capabilities.

Update from service number 4..
They drained the oil and measured it again, loss of 1.26 qts over 1100 miles. Service reported to BMW their findings, while this is just a hair under that 1qt/750mi advisory previously posted, BMW has stated that they want to replace the valve cover gasket and remeasure after another 1000 miles. As the gasket needs to come from Germany, I expect to be out of the car for another 2-3 weeks but I will update when I can. |

Basically summing up the last call I had with the service advisor, BMW hopes this will fix it but is not sure that it will, we will consider this a step as it will be baby steps if this doesn't address the issue.
Pretty much, Thank you for your patience and please be the guinea pig. As I got the feeling that BMW is aware of complaints regarding this issue. |

When my wife had her 18' 330 at the dealer for an oil change and some other concerns I had to stop by to show them how the door panel squeaked. When I was walking down in the shop there was a guy with a M340 engine out and torn apart. I can only imagine due to oil consumption.

I have also requested that they check the rear main seal since there was no sign of oil in the engine bay or in my parking spot. Could explain why there was no burning oil, smoke, etc. and the oil is just collecting in the bell housing.
It seems that they will fight doing this since it means dropping the transmission, but my spidey sense is tingling with this being the culprit. |
