My X3M Comp has the S58, which is supposedly the same 503HP TT I6 that the new G80 M3 will have. Okay, the M3 will be 500+lbs lighter...
You can read my sig of all my previous cars that I've had in the last 4 years. Owning the Tesla M3P alongside the X3M Comp has been an interesting experience. I gotta say, I prefer the Tesla in almost every way. Not even going to get into what's already been said on the M3P. It makes the X3M feel like a horse and buggy. I am sure the new M3 wll be better on track but I don't drive on the track. For regular street driving (which 99% of new M3/M4s see) the Tesla is just unbeatable. With that being said, I will most likely order the new G80 M3 once it comes out. Hopefully they will fix the turbo lag that the S58 has been experiencing below 3K RPM.

Something needs to b e shown soon because I test drove a Tesla Model 3 Performance on Friday and I'm having a hell of a time trying to come up with reasons not to pull the trigger on one for a daily driver... I want a fast, capable sedan but need BMW to keep releasing info/pics on the G80 so I can stay interested and not cave on a BEV lol

Scares me enough that I will not test drive an EV...I’m not emotionally there yet . My wife and I aim to test drive a 992 and M5C this Christmas break though since the wait time for the M4 is on the limit for us and we discussed it this thanksgiving break and think we actually could make do with a 911 without too much hassle. We’ll see how good it is at the test drive... |

Hard to avoid giving in to the Taycan temptation (or the Audi e-Tron GT clone) But this video helps: So did seeing how badly Panameras appeared to handle on various track days... but that might just have been the drivers. |

I think if I got one, I'd have to pick up a fun ICE weekend car like a 996 C4S or E9x M3. I did get back into my 6mt M2 and missed the sounds and shifting experience a bit... that may change if I spent a week+ in the Tesla. My car did feel incredibly slow afterwards, though I want the G80 to be good because it will tick most of the boxes I'm looking for in my next vehicle purchase... However, I'm still toying with the idea of going GT4 or CPO 911 + using my fiance's civic as the daily since it's paid off and runs great. She'd get her own SUV to daily. I want a sedan that can be jack-of-all trades like the current M3 sedan is... if I go coupe, it can work but I'd rather do a 2-car system as described above if I went coupe again. Anyway, BMW give us more info, please!!

While I think I could get used to BEV, I just couldn't live with the Tesla design. Model S is okay more or less, everything else is not, including Model 3. The interior is even worse, one of the most boring interiors I've ever seen. I'm afraid I'll get depressed after I've been sitting an hour in the car.

I would do M340i xDrive compared to this on a twisty canyon road with switchbacks. Maybe even a tuned one which would cost about the same. |

Your idea is sound for CA but I'm on the east coast with a ton of straight, flat roads around me. So my use case is a lot of around town driving on my daily commute + some track time + occasional back road fun. I'd go G80 over Model 3 at the moment but would still go Model 3 over M340xi, but that's just me.

Tesla is just ugly and the interior is crap and cheap, hate the massive LCD that is glued to the dash with and no switches or gauge. I don't care if it is the fastest car in the word, if you want the fastest thing on a straight line just get a muscle car and mod it. Those skinny tiers and massive curb weight are not fun in the bends or even on a mild track day and yes I have driven it on HW17 and skyline here in NorCal and would take my M3 any day.
BUT.... if the renderings are true, the G80 is even uglier than the Tesla model 3

Reasons not to get a model 3.
1. Every trim model from 30-70k looks exactly the same 2. Interior is ugly and has cheap materials 3. Steering wheel looks like it belongs on a Fisher Price kids toy 4. Every IT worker that has ever made more than 50k is driving a base model one, it's the new Toyota Camry 5. Shoddy paint quality 6. Shoddy build quality 7. Slow at high way + speeds, only quick from 0-90 8. Most tracks don't have infrastructure for fast charging, can't make it through 4 sessions in a day 9. No apple car play integration 10. Poor support/network and availability of parts for repairs |

1. Similar to other luxury makes, except for gearheads who notice the differences. Also makes it the ultimate sleeper.
2. Everybody who has been in mine has complimented the design and comfort. 3. Steering wheel feels great, and the steering itself is surgically accurate. 4. Oh, so it's the new 3-series? 5/6: No longer accurate. 7. In other words, quicker than most anything else on the road 99.8% of the time... 8. Broad generalization, but not a concern for most owners. 9. NAV maps and other entertainment options are excellent, and the audio system quality is outstanding. 10. Yet it has the highest owner satisfaction in the industry. Last edited by ZCD1; 12-13-2019 at 11:37 AM.. |

Just spent the entire weekend preping / ceramic coating freind's new model 3. I am not new to Tesla's at all.
We found so many defects on the car that it is not funny. Pretty much all of its lenses need to be replaced and its front fender was bent. (12 miles total on the car) I know this is a G80 vs Tesla comparison but getting into my M340 after Model 3 was a great welcome. I also live in Seattle where every single geek who doesn't know squat about cars and work for either Amazon or Microsoft drives one. They also think that they are soo cool and saving the environment one at a time! So, no, big Thank you! My buddy and I joked that in order for me to get an electric car, it needs to perform well but also needs to look like an Alfa. I am pretty sure that my next daily will be electric but I am also pretty sure that it wont be Tesla.

Too many people have obviously not driven a Performance Model 3.
Driving the Model 3P for 3 months now and I absolutely dread driving the X3M Comp (bit of an exaggeration but you get the point). The S58 feels like a dog in comparison and the major turbo lag kills any fun you can have with it on the street. It felt quick at first, but now in comparison to zero lag and instant torque it's actually quite annoying to drive. TBH, I'd much rather have the S55 with the instant low down torque vs this S58. The paint and body panel issues are very minor (but present) and don't bother me one bit. Once you're driving it's all smiles. Driving this thing never gets old. The steering feel and zero body lean are very satisfying and love the brutal acceleration. I have gotten a couple of easy 3.21s and 3.25 sec 0-60's withOUT a 1ft rollout. 2.9s With rollout. This was using Dragy. The car also "whirs" like some kind of spaceship on acceleration. I am not even going to mention the built in security cameras, and all the amazing tech inside. I now find filling up fuel to be such an annoying chore. I used to blindly hate Tesla with a damn passion. I hated what they stood for. Taking away fun enthusiast cars from the car community. Once I drove one I was blown away. This has been by far my top favorite car that I've driven and I've owned over 30 cars. This is a BMW forum so I know the Tesla hate will be abundant.

....I think you get the gist of what I'm trying to convey. I'm sure you're happy with your TESLA. Your elation is felt through your words. Obviously you are passionate about the car and it checks the boxes on your personal checklist. For others it doesn't have that same effect. If somebody gave me one I would commute in it, but there's no way in hell that I would give up my MT ICE ///M car for one. There's no way in hell that I would ever spend my hard earned money on one either. IF I had such a surplus of cash - think, lotto winner - that it didn't matter (...and I already had a Porsche GT3 in my garage along with an M), I might consider one. |
