BMW M440i Gran Coupé xDrive Mild Hybrid Availability in Japan

Hi everyone,

I’m in the market for a BMW M440i Gran Coupé xDrive (right-hand drive, 2022 or newer) and was initially planning to import one from Japan. However, I recently heard that Japanese models might not come with the 48V mild hybrid system that is standard in other markets.

When running a VIN check on some Japanese imports, I noticed the engine code is B58B30B, but I couldn’t find clear confirmation about whether the 48V mild hybrid system is included in these models.

Does anyone here have experience with Japanese-spec M440i Gran Coupé models? Are they truly missing the mild hybrid system, or is this misinformation?

I’d appreciate any insights, especially from owners, importers, or BMW specialists familiar with Japanese imports.

Thanks in advance!

Hello.
I drive a 2023 G26 M440i in Japan.
The Japan-spec G26 M440i does not come equipped with a mild hybrid system.
Even after the LCI, the mild hybrid system was not added.
Since it’s a pure gasoline-powered car that goes against the times, it might actually have niche appeal overseas among enthusiasts.

I think the 2022-upwards M440i version already comes with the 48v mild hybrid system but maybe some model doesn’t come with it? There is a lot of these car dealers website that don’t specify it even on a bunch of BMW dealers in Japan.

All M440i models in Japan are not equipped with a mild hybrid system.
Even if you want to buy a hybrid version of the M440i, it is not available in Japan.
This is said to be because Japan's emissions regulations are more lenient compared to other countries, so there was no need to go out of the way to equip the vehicles with a mild hybrid system.
