Anyone gone from 2 cars to M340i?
Hi guys,
For as long as I remember, I've almost always had a practical car for family\dog\sport activities and a weekend\fun car tucked away in the garage. At the moment I've got a 2017 F11 530d M Sport touring and a Jaguar F-Type V6S convertible. With everything gonig on in the world, I've recently been considering consolidating into one car and the M340i touring is really the only car which appears to tick all the boxes. However, the only time I've gone down to one car was a rare BMW manual 550i (4.8l V8) touring, but I really missed having something fun in the garage but that 10 years ago. So I guess my question is, has anyone else consolidated their fleet and if so any regrets? Could also be false economics as suspect depreciation on a newer M340i doing 12k miles a year will be greater than that of my 2013 Jag (4k miles a year) and a 2017 Beemer (8k miles a year) when you combine the two. In fact, neither have derpeciated in the last 2.5 years I've owned them, but it's been an odd few years. Last edited by SCZ4; 11-01-2022 at 10:49 AM.. |

I may, at some point, add something like a Z4 with a stick (if the rumored one comes to the states). But the Gran Coupe is a great all-around sporty car. It can handle my two dogs and teenager, plus hauling his friends around when necessary. And will absorb reasonable trip to the hardware store, etc. All that said, I would have bought the M340i touring, had it been available here in the US. re: economies. My insurance was not cut in half, but went down by about a quarter--based on the cost and newness of the new vehicle and loss of the multi-car discount. It is nice just having to deal with maintenance on one car, and having added back the space in the garage for other purposes. And there's a certain ease of just grabbing one set of keys without having to decide which car you want to drive that day. My 2 was off warranty, so the clock had begun ticking on more expensive maintenance and repairs. And the Mazda had a known engine flaw that was a bit of a ticking time bomb. That's what really pushed me into the new car, frankly. Or, at least added a sense of urgency while both cars still had inflated used values.

Never had two cars at the same time before (unless you count the wife's as my 'second car'...don't think she sees it like that though!).
Suppose I've always just chosen a car that I really liked/wanted and so long a it coped adequately with all my demands of it then that was all I really needed. Can only drive one at a time so didn't face the dilemma of choosing between one or another and only one 'lot' of tax, insurance, petrol, servicing and occasional heartache! |

Downsized to a single vehicle
We downsized from a 2018 X2 and a 2011 Z4. Loved them both.
Replaced with an ordered 23 M440Xi convertible. Sensational car. Lovely to drive and ticks all of the boxes from the previous vehicles except the ability to have a tow hitch which we used to use to haul our ebikes around. Plus being 70 yrs old I dont have the issue of getting in and out of the Z4, I don't bend like that anymore. I'll miss the Z4 just like I miss the Z3 I use to have. |
