I dunno with Dukec in charge. He doesn't care what customers like. He will tell us what we like.

I'm on my 2nd F82 and 5th BMW. I resemble the people you are talking about, but I have stopped by the MB dealer to look at AMGs a few times already. I'm still holding out hope that these cars look better in person than in pics. The C63 AMG also has "500+ HP -, transmission, performance, balance, driving experience, technology, engineering..."

I was a die hard BMW fan for years, I'm not so much as I use to be, but I still do root for BMW and put my hope in for them. Since my E36 I have always had a BMW in my garage for 20+ years. In 2018, I went to Mercedes, and had no BMW in my garage. Luckily the M2 was BMW's saving grace and I got one a year later, but other than that I love my CLS much more than the G30 5er I had, and the wife and I just picked up another Merc (GLC) to replace our son's old X3 that he will be taking to college. While BMW is a brand that I still do love, they have been testing my love for them lately, and other brands have been coming out with some very compelling products. Competition is very good, and it proves that BMW will need to be working very hard to stay at the top of the game.

Newer Z4's are sweet, they went more James Bond Coupe with it.

Agree, I see a lot of people praise the E9X. I owned one and it was definitely a good car, but it didn't really invoke any emotion from a design standpoint. Good, not bad at all, but not great. I didn't like how they broke from BMW tradition of driver slanted dash either. Just this uninspiring ugly plank dash. One detail that is just amazing though was the V8's in the M's. Wow.

When I really think about it, the styling on the F30 M Sport 340i, my current car, is really quite beautiful. I love it, very visceral, I like how the doors bulge out on the bottom, and the side skirts are really cool. Just a very visceral sculpted looking car. Subjective but I think they just really nailed it. TheF80 The M's were even better.

Dukec also talks about customers being less inclined to buy two-door cars these days, so in order to attract the clientele, a more daring design has to be implemented on these models. He also mentions that the ideas of the Concept 4 Series was not to make it a small 8 Series. So the team played with a smaller kidney grille on the 4 Series also, but they felt it was too close to the larger and more expensive 8 Series.
So basically the design team was lazy and had no vision.
The 4 looked too much like the 8 so they decided to slap on this Fugly ridiculous grill to separate them. No wonder it looks such an afterthought and disconnected from rest of design.

Agree, and his comments on the interview definitely made me lose a little respect. Downplaying the Hoffmeister Kink literally saying.. "people make such a big deal about the kink, it was just one small detail from one person" Like.. Man, that is a huge part of the company's industrial design over the years, and frankly a part of how you are here today, at the very least you could give homage to it and say while we honor our past deeply we are pushing forward in new directions. Sounded kind of like an ingrate with that comment. I think it will be interesting to see how the market responds to the new 4.

I will say that's a pretty good looking car so I don't see a problem with BMW lifting attractive design cues from other vehicles. Even if some of the design shares cues from other automakers, the front end for better or worse will ensure that nobody ever confuses this car for an Infinity or Genesis.

It's a sad day when BMW has to lift designs from Hyundai.

Who's making any original designs these days? You only have to look at the link below to see how bad Hyunda/Kia has been ripping off BMW. The reality is that no matter what BMW does there's going to be some resemblance to automakers using them as a styling benchmark.

https://www.carthrottle.com/post/add...budget-bimmer/

Judging by the amount of posts on this topic you and another poster are making, I'm a little concerned by the amount of anxiety BMW styling is causing you. You should relax a bit as it's just a car and you have yet to even see one in person.

I'm not sure seeing it in person is going to change my mind. I've yet to warm up to the G20 styling.

Volvo is doing it right these days.

Soooooo... whatcha doing with that Le Mans Blue F80??? I may know a guy who would buy it
That's a great question. There's a big gulf between the low and high specced cost for the next one right now. And I'm quite a ways out from it still anyway.

As of now it'll be arriving next spring and my plan is to still keep the F80. Things could always change but I approached the next one with the intention of adding not replacing.

If the time comes I'll do my best to find you here in the future.

Yes, although apparently the gearing is very tall, I'm definitely going to look at the GTS4.0 when that arrives at dealers. My perfect vert is the 991.2 Speedster, a topless GT3.

I don't blame you for wanting to keep that car and would if I were you lol When I saw it at Bimmerfest East a few years ago I drooled. We chatted and you showed me the email from BMW about the car. Still laugh thinking about it since I'm still bummed they stopped making the color.

Good luck with the car AND the next regardless of the brand!

Really appreciate it, and yes, I have a definite recollection of that encounter at BFE, I think 3 years back now. Wow time flies.

Even 5 years on now, I'm still largely smitten with how the car came out when compared with my pre-order vision. The roads in our area haven't exactly been kind to the car all around, but for over 5 years old, it still looks like a 12-18 month old car, IMO.

After all of this time I've not yet found another F80 that made me question my final spec as ordered. That's a hell of a sign for someone who gets sick of their cars usually at the 24 month marker. The LMB is/was the perfect heritage-esque color for the F80 platform; while I'm sad they didn't pump them out in mass looking how mine does, I'm also thrilled to have a 1 of 2 sleeping below me while I'm seated in my office right now.

Funny enough, my next 2 purchases after the F80 were blue cars, then the third I went back to my old standby, Grey. Neither of the two in the middle were supposed to be blue, it just worked out that way - 2 convoluted stories... Now, in shopping for next years car, and playing with the configurator for hours upon hours, I have this feeling that the offered standard blue is going to be my choice there too. I just can't avoid blue cars I guess.

Haha Dave! I had wanted a blue car for years and they were either impossible to find or not even offered.

So, when the E92 came along it wasn't even a question what to order, and really BMW/Porsche make the best blues.

My wife is already pointing out Phytonic Blue X3s for her, so maybe I rub off on people

I've never been a blue car kind of guy, especially dislike navy.
Yas Marina was probably the one exception, liked that pastel look. Color is an interesting thing. So subjective
