Encouraging that noboby on here seems to have had any issues with this.
Further Web searches have shown it's pretty much a matter of luck whether or not the filter breaks apart when it's changed. I am surprised that BMW don't seem to have addressed the problem by now. The video clips below describe the problem and its cause. |

The videos show that the problem is due to way the filters are assembled and also that some after market brands are worse than OEM.

I don’t have empirical proof but I personally think a more frequent oil change schedule also helps prevent the filter disintegration issue. I did an initial change at 1600 miles and plan to do every 5000 miles from here on out.

hopefully it's due to BMW's crazy oil change intervals.
i was checking out the M5 competition oil change period in my country. 2 years, 20,000 miles. yup. note to self: don't buy 2nd hand BMWs here ... |
