My '07 335i has 486 miles or until February 3rd until its warranty expires.

As mine is a purchase, it almost seems like a no-brainer to get the extended maintenance package for both the convenience and just-in-case factors, but I wanted to get the advice of the ones in the know.....E-90 posters.

I have already gotten quoted $2090 for the 6-year/100k Gold warranty. Price is not really the issue here BTW...just whether it's worth it.

And I also read some diagnostic tools from(http://www.obd2tool.com/goods-4507-2...+A2BC.html)and BMW maintenance (http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...aspx)knowledge.

I need a good suggestion.

Gold warranty is different than the maintenance package. My opinion? It's easy enough to change your oil, brakes, etc yourself. Otherwise, you can probably save money having it done at a BMW independent shop. I'm not sure it ever pays off to have the extended maintenance.

Warranty companies are in it to make money. In my experience, it's never wise to get it. Read the coverage very carefully as the exclusion clause can be as long as a football field and there's too many gray areas. Personally, I would rather have the money in my account and I get to choose what gets fixed instead of giving someone your money in order for them to tell you what you can or cannot get fixed.

My opinion on the extended maintenance is similar.

In theory, if you properly maintain your car, it should not catastrophically break down to a point of needing the warranty coverage.

I also would like to get some opinions about this. I am a very low mileage driver, mainly due to deployments, so i'd never hit the mileage but I am in it for the time frame. I got quoted a similar price for an additional 3 years. I think the time frame they quote people is from the original warranty date.

I like the piece of mind (and *hit happens). Look at all of the 2001-2005 Porsche owners stuck with IMS failures.

Catastrophic engine damage as early as 60k miles... and $20k - $40k to replace the engine! I had to drop $3k to have the seal replaced before it blew, and those thoughts were on my mind when I went into BMW.

Transferable warranties can also help increase the resell value as well (I am not sure if the maintenance plan is transferable.. cannot remember).

Again, it's piece of mind for me knowing that I am covered for the next 6 years. Who knows what will creep up in 5?

I guess it depends if you will go to BMW to get everything fixed or to a free repair shop.

If you will go to BMW anyway then probably yes, however if you will get your car fixed in a non BMW free garage then most likely not

My experience is that if you plan to sell the car after a relatively short time then such a BMW maintained car is easier to sell

Otherwise - just looking at once own wallet - no, since maintenance is standard kind of work with these cars

There is no IMS failure equivalent on BMW engines. It makes it a no brainer to get the warranty on a M96/97 engined Porsche. On a BMW, you are looking at an unbalanced camshaft as the worst possible failure. That's very far from the $30k range, more in the 3k range, and extremely rare.

If you have Geico you have MBI (mechanical breakdown insurance) You pay a small monthly fee as part of your premium, mine is something like $12 every six months. After the 48 month / 50K manufacturers warranty is over the MBI kicks in. MBI is full coverage for all parts and repairs with a $250 deductible. The work can be done by BMW and as per the info on Gieco's site it is full coverage where as the BME extended plan does not cover all repairs. Gieco seems to have the best rate so it might pay to switch. The MBI is added automatically to your premium on a new vehicle or can be added I believe up to 15 months or 15K after starting the policy on a new vehicle. Be careful, if you are leasing and have Geico it is added to your policy automatically and you have to request it be be removed. This happened to me with my MB lease, I paid fot it for 3 years without needing it since it was a 3 year lease.
