It's like the 320i guys that are increasing boost etc. to achieve similar HP and TQ to a stock 330i, I think for the most part the 320i engine is similar internally to the 330i. That makes sense because the 330i comes at the 320i modded levels from factory. The problem is, the 330i may be maxed out and to go further we need B48TU internals.
The B48 also has a larger turbocharger, but then again who knows what the B46 is truly capable of. I imagine a stage 1 is safe on the B46 as it is on the B48. Difference being that the B48 has higher potential limits. I can’t imagine BMW would build an engine that runs at the max limit of it’s hp/tq capacity but I could be wrong

Yes, could be that Stage 1 of about 290 HP and 370 TQ (per their website) is OK on 95 RON / 91 AKI, but that TQ figure seems like a massive gain and makes me nervous - must feel amazing though.

That TQ is the same as the stock M340i! I am sure it must 'feel' a lot different being delivered by a 3.0 litre and 6 cylinder vs. 2.0 litre and 4 cylinder though.

Anyone seen any posted drag slips from a 330i with Stage 1 running 91 AKI octane?

Definitely a little more linear but man am I impresssed with this 4 cylinder. I personally think it sounds good as well. Certainly not like the 4 cylinders of old

@VipinLJ were you able to confirm with PTF that you were using the incorrect map? You'd probably help a bunch of people given many, like me, would assume the b48 map would be the one to select.

The drama continues.

My 2020 330i is currently in production and I am outside the USA (Caribbean delivery). I contacted my local BMW Genius and asked what engine my car will come with and it's the B48B20O1. He said the B46 is indeed for North America.

The below link breaks down the engine code. Still searching to see if it is basically the exact same internals, compression etc. as the North American B46TU. Edit: Looks like it is indeed 10.2:1 compression.

What is your full engine number? Is it B46D or does the D come later?

Where do I find the full engine number? Vin decoder websites only give the first 4 numbers and it is B46D. Not B46B which is what I would expect.

Just messaged a member on another forum (he’s located in USA) who also has a BM3 flash on his car. He has a German made 2019 330i and he confirms his car has a B48B20 engine, not a B46. He’s running the B48 flash with no problem, just like g20beam. He also said he bought his car in 04/2019.
I wonder if German-made American 330is (like his car) have the B48 engine whereas Mexican-made American 330is (like mine) has the B46? Confusion confusion!!!

See the image below, can you see that looking under the hood? Maybe reach down with your phone and take a pic and then look at pic to read if you can visually see with your eye.

I have a hard time believing any G20 330s have a B48 after reading through the documentation put out from BMW. This is all very confusing. I wonder what use it would be to reach out to BMW via email and see if they could provide any clarification? I doubt their customer service reps could be of much assistance..

Could be, or could be because his car was manufactured before November 2018 which was the first month of production for the new B46TU.

It seems that there are indeed some G20 330i’s with B48 engines. My BMW Genius sent me the BMW order entry system / production screen shot that listed my engine as a B48 as I posted above. I am in the Caribbean. The B46 could be exactly the same internally but with different mapping for emissions in the USA.

The B48....T (non-330i) has the uprated internals, the B48....O (330i) like mine is probably the same internals as the B46TU.

I found this online, take it for what it’s worth..

MODELS / ENGINES / TRANSMISSION / SUSPENSION
The models shown are 20i, 30i, and 40i which correspond to their BMW engine equivalents. The 40i equates to the Z4 M40i, but the A90 Supra’s engine is designated as B58C (turbo 6 cylinder). The 20i engine is the B48D (turbo 4 cylinder) and the 30i engine is the B46D (turbo 4 cylinder).

Sucks that the engine number is etched way down. With my luck, I’ll probably drop my phone in there

Wonder how different that is to the B48B20O. I doubt the B48 has upgraded crank, pistons and bearing(s) for the 330i. The B46 seems to just be built slightly differently and mapped differently for USA emissions and mpg highway.

After all this discussion, out of warranty, I think I would be willing to have a custom map done for my conditions of high ambient temps and humidity, only 95 RON / 91 AKI fuel, to roughly 275 HP and 325 TQ. Feel like that could be fairly safe and within extra margin of safety tolerances that the 2020 B4 G series 330i engines were built to. Would think these increases would actually be felt and worth the small damage risk and money for the mapping.
