M340i Stage 3 best staggered setup

Hello all,

My M340i touring (xdrive) will soon get a stage 3 tuning. I will end up with approximately 530whp and 680wnm (500w lbf-ft) with RON 98 (93 usa) fuel.

I am looking for the right summer tire setup, with maximum grip, without sacrificing too much on comfort, since it is my daily driver.

At the moment I'm riding with 225/40/19 Pirelli P zero runflats (RFT) at the front and 255/35/19 at the rear. Is it true that a thinner tire (1 size smaller) non RFT rides about as comfortably?

I have seen beautiful 20 inch rims, but I doubt whether I can achieve my goal with them. Which tire/rim staggered combination do you recommend? I also like to read about experiences.

In terms of tire options, for example:
- Continental Sport Contact 7 (non RFT)
- Michelen Pilot Sport 4S (non RFT)
- Or better experiences with other tires?

Possible staggered setups:
- Front: 235/35/20, Rear: 275/30/20
- Front: 255/35/19, Rear: 295/30/19
- Front: 255/35/19, Rear: 285/30/19
- Front: 235/40/19, Rear: 265/35/19
- Or better experiences with a different setup?

Thanks in advance!

If going with 19s, I would do the 255/35 and 295/30. If 20s, I would do 245/35 and 285/30, either way they are both good fits for x drive.

In relation to comfort, there will be no difference between the 19 and 20 inch rims, given the thickness of the tires (front 35 and rear 30), correct?

Front: 245/35/20 and Rear: 275/30/20 was a typo on my part, with the front I meant "235/35/20"

Do you happen to have one of these sizes on your BMW and what are your experiences?

That second number isn’t exactly the sidewall thickness, it is the percentage of the first number. So a 295/30 will have a slightly bigger sidewall than a 285/30. I am currently X Drive on 245/35/20 and 285/30/20, my front and rear sidewalls are both 3.4 inches. The 255/35/19 has a sidewall of 3.5 inches and it is exactly 26 Diameter, so it’s a very good fit. Ride comfort for me isn’t bad at all, but I am lowered so that makes it slightly worse as well. I am also running adaptive suspension.

What size wheels you have and which offset?

M Performance 18' retrofit bbk ,lowered on Dinan springs with handling kit, zero rubbing on the thicker shocks, no weird vibrations or shakes no rubbing at all even with 4 occupants in the car. flushed perfect with fender, No spacers. For those that like to know exactly what my car has.

Vossen HF-5 20x9 et 25 front 20x10.5 et 45 rear perfect offset if you're looking for that fender to tire fitment. No poke, not sunken in.

Tires non-run flats Continental DWS 06 sport plus
245/35 r20 95Y XL FRONT
275/30 R20 97Y XL REAR

This fitment was considered for my M340i by Tom O @ vibe motor sport who contacted Vossen for the correct offset and tires. To prevent the Xdrive system from damage and eliminate the need to run spacers also needed to take into consideration the bigger front brake caliper clearance.

Thanks for all the info!

What is the reason you went for 275 and not 285 on the rear?

The difference between 245 and 275 is - 0.96% and the difference between 245 and 285 is - 0.07% that seems to be better or does it have some other adverse effect?

Your very welcome!

I have no adverse effects, with the 275 vs the 285. I’ve seen people run both. Depends on offsets. I honestly am new to the BMW platform and scene. Im learning as I go from trial and error and from others & there experiences.

Tom 0 VIBE Motorsports and Vossen wheels helped determine the wheels off sets and tire sizes. They do a lot of wheel sizing for the M340i.

While I cannot answer your question correctly. All I can say is that I trust what vossen recommended. But I also have seen people run 285.

since my research showed so many different types of offsets and tires being used on the M340i it was hard to come to a conclusion alone, some people reported issues with there set up and I didn’t want that to happen to me , one guy damaged his xdrive system due to wrong tire sizes. I didn’t want to make the same mistake and destroy my xdrive system.

Again sorry for the limited response.

Same here ever since I’ve gotten my wheel set up I’m enjoying the traction, even in the rain the handling is amazing.

This is also my first time running non run flats and let me tell you, I will never buy another run flat tire. The quality of the ride is day and night.

I’ll try to find the post and tag you.

Because of his post is what made me do a thorough research on stagger set up for my M340i xDrive.

Your response provides a lot of information!

I suspect that it may indeed be due to all the different setups and rim/wheel combinations.

It's a good idea to check with a professional company.

I've decided that I want to at least stick to 19 inches.

At the moment I have the 792M rims from BMW. I like them very much, but because of the 8J front and 8.5J rear I cannot/hardly fit wider tires.

Suppose I replace my current run flat tires with non run flat Michelen PS4 and I keep the current size (225/40/19 front and 255/35/19 rear), is there still a big difference between a wider set (for example 255/35/19 front and 295/30/19 rear)?
In that case I will have to buy different rims.

I also read contradictions about 265/35 on a 8.5J rim, does anyone have experience with my (or other) rims and a 235/40/19 (8J) front and 265/35/19 (8.5J) rear, or is this really not an option? recommended for more performance?

You're welcome. Thanks for all your help and knowledge. she handles well in the rain and snow. super happy with my set up. and I honestly have zero issues. Even with the lowering kit. What I'm really happy about is the fact that I don't have to run spacers.

You're welcome, and that's the thing we all have different options on our cars from factory. What works for my car may not work for yours. And its why I posted exactly what my car has so you get a better understanding on why this set up was chosen for me, I hate to see your spend money off my specs and it not work for you (more than likely it will work for you too but why risk it when you can get a true professional help). while I respect everyone's opinion and set ups, at the end of the day I'm going to respect and go with the expertise of someone who has been doing this for a long time. I'm the type of person that I don't want to buy something twice. I learned from my hay days not to jump the gun so quickly.

keep us posted on what your decided to go with.
