330i Modded to M340

After driving my 330i with a JB+ for over 3 years, I decided to test drive an M340, and boy was that a mistake. I was considering trading mine for an M340, but the most affordable one I found with the same options as mine in the whole country is $43,000 with 15,000 extra miles. I received a disappointing trade-in estimate of $26,000 for my 330i, so I decided against it. Not worth spending an extra $20k+ and not know the history of the car etc. I've not had any problems with mine and it is still in almost perfect condition so have decided I should further modify it.

I've seen many threads on this topic, but I'm inexperienced with tuning and don't understand exactly what I need. I know nothing will compare to the 6 cyl but want to get as close as I can.

If you had a budget of $3-4k for modifications, what would you get? I only have access to 91 octane fuel in California if that makes a difference. All suggestions appreciated!

Not sure about Cali because you have strict emissions and shit fuel, but in EU you can go stage 2 with intake, chargepipe, downpipe, catback exaust, ecu tune ideally for E30 fuel or at least 93 octane and you can get similar performance as a stock M340. Actually, you will have less power than M340i, something like 340-350 HP but it will feel like M340 because 330i is lighter.
But such a tune will cost you more than 3-4k. Perhaps 5-8k realistically (you still need to pass emissions?..) Also maintenance costs will go up

Thanks. Car is registered in FL so no worries with emissions but not a fan of being catless because of the smell

I was in a similar sitaution. I was considering trading the 330i for M340i. The trade-in value for my 2019 330i was terrible, so I decided against it. Instead, I started modding my car like a lunatic lol. I spent well over $10K in mods. To most, it might not make sense to mod the 330i and spend that kind of money. But to me, I’m as happy as I can be. Plus, no car note. 👍🏻

With your budget, maybe consider a downpipe and a stage 2 tune. I saw several people running low 13s to even high 12s with a similar mods.

That's what I'm leaning towards. Might do something with exhaust as well, currently have muffler delete but would be nice to have an actual exhaust system.

I have Dinan exhaust and love the sound! I couldn’t be happier. My only gripe, I’m not a big fan of the tips. I would’ve preferred the double-walled angle tips, similar to stock.

I will try but there are a couple of videos already. Dinan has one posted. I think the sound in the video is pretty spot on. If anything, it sounds much better in person.

I’m currently running E85 custom tune from Navardi tuned. According to the cars he tuned before we should be expecting somewhere around 330whp on stock turbo. If you have the budget I would look into im450 turbo from iposmotorsport and do a turbo swap pairing it with a custom tune for 91 oct. You should be seeing somewhere around 370whp. My current setup consists of dinan intake, ftp chargepipe, res delete, catted 200cell fi downpipe.

Despite high car prices, dealers seem to still lowball all trade-in offers. Go thorough KBB, Vroom and all the other internet sites and compare the trade-in offers there to what the dealer offered.

When I replaced my F30 the dealer trade-in offers on a new M340i were running about $9k and the KBB offer was about $11k. Not a hard decision about which way to go. Remember that the online offers are usually only good for 7 days, so you don’t have much time to pull the trigger.

Easily doable.

https://iposmotorsport.com/collections/turbo-upgrade <- im450 can do 400 whp on 93, im500 does 450whp on 93

https://store.activeautowerke.com/co...atted-downpipe <- imo best downpipe choice because catless may smell but if you don’t care go catless and save the $$

https://navardituned.com/en-us/products/b48 <- this isn’t gonna work without a custom tune obv

Besides this, maybe get a ftp charge pipe and new air intake. Neither are gonna give any hp gains but the charge pipe is for peace of mind and the air intake improves the sound.

Last, but not least, get a lsd installed. 400whp is serious power for an open diff and this is the most important aspect of the m340i imo
