Hate to give the impression of defending BMW on design, but I don't think big grills are out of the ordinary right now, in fact bmw is late to the game. Look at Audi and look at these Mercedes, especially the GT coupe. Almost seems bmw is just following their lead. But of course all designs aren't created equal. I like the first Audi large grills but now some of them are very strange especially the SUVs. I hate the Mercedes GT coupe grill, and all of the Mercedes with super large forward facing Tristar emblems - so ostentatious.

Then they should have done it right

not a fan of the big grill trend but at least Audi makes them look good.
How do you figure? The Audi grill is much worse. They have a huge swath of attention grabbing grill on a plain, generic looking car. At least in the 4 concept, bmw has given it more aggressive lines to match the bold grill.

It's fine though, you guys can go buy a VW instead. Enjoy.

Lmao it's not just the fact of the big grill, the Audi actually doesn't look like dog shit with it
Speak for yourself, to me the Audi design is a disaster. It's a blah VW product with boring, conservative design language, and a big blob punctuating the front end. If that was my only option in the segment, I'd get a Honda and call it a day. At least I'd have a quality product.

If your talking about quality product then BMW is crap, one of the worst crap you can buy actually. And there design is going the same way as well.

A vehicle's appearance is a matter opinion but calling a sophisticated-looking A7 "dogshit" just confirms that you're clearly overreaching. Poorly done.

I'm in the camp that thinks big grills add something to the table.

Matter of fact, for me:
Lexus (RC/GS) > BMW (4Series leak) > BMW (X7/7Series) > Audi

Every time I see an F/F-Sport Lexus I can't help but think how aggressive it looks. Audis look tame in comparison.

This 4Series leak looks good to me and the G80 will look just that much better. I'm pumped!

It's only a matter of opinion until someone questions yours, clearly. I'm looking at the picture you posted. Dogshit may be reaching, but so is sophistication. It's simple. Ugly.

Its been a week for me to digest this front end and it has not grown on me one bit. This model will cause a shift with loyal customers switching to other brands more than ever. BMW's never had the best interiors, its driving dynamics were good but wasn't always class leading like they once were but what it had was unique exterior styling that kept loyal customers to keep coming back. A nice blend of luxury with aggressiveness that made them different from MB or Audi.

This new model just strays way way far from what loyalist have grown to love about the brand. To me its flat out trying too hard and the end result is a UGLY front end.

I am curious if that braket in front is actually for the license plate or to protect in shipping.

If that bracket is the size of a euro plate that would make the plate enormous... if that is the plate bracket the perspective of the photo is somewhat exaggerating the width of the grills. Same thing with the concept car. I cant form a judgement until i see proper photos with the whole design together

As much as I love my 3 series, quality is horrible there is no way any car can be worse. This thing has had so many squeaks and rattles and even broke down completely within the first 1500 miles. Now on top of all that its ugly too, The Audi actually does big grills right and offers better quality and similar performance, best of all it's not ugly! Sorry but your opinions wrong

This car would need to be Nissan Murano convertible-levels of bad for me to turn it down. I'm extremely eager to enjoy all of the new G20 tech (particularly, Driver Assistance Pro) in a coupe form factor.

BMWs are fashion items with excellent brand equity - distinctiveness sells. I am confident this will be a sales hit.

Audi has their quality issues as well (I know I'm coming from three of them).

Catch a grip guys. In two years time you'll be thinking how great the new face is and will forget how wrong you were, and you will be buying one.

Interesting take. Not so sure the Audi grilles were accepted without issue, when they first arrived. We are used to them now.

Quality... that's debatable, as most stuff is from the VAG parts bin. Audi in the UK doesn't have the best quality/reliability record.

I'd put BMW and Audi on a similar level for reliability.

My colleague came through today to my room. He is looking to buy a new car. He knows im a bmw guy. His current car is a toyota auris. He was excited clutching a pic of the 4 series and raved about how beautiful it was and that he was buying it. I managed to conceal my shock.
So this car is 'appealing' to non bmw guys and 'appalling' to bmw guys.

Ugly. After owning two 4 series coupes, I won't be getting a third. Will an M340i satisfy me?

This is a brilliant idea!
With sales numbers going up Bimmer are every where...
Question:So how to make the brand exclusive again?
Solution: Easy! Make a car so ugly no one is going to buy it!

Don't know what to say. I am the black sheep in my clan as I am the single one with BMW. Lots of Audi's in my family (A5, S5, A6 AllRoad and A8) and they never had a problem or some very minor crap, while my Bimmers were not flawless, not to mention now I am the joke since my engine died at 80,000 km after the chain snapped...
I really used to love the bimmers but slowly, many small disappointments are pushing me away, and the design is one of the elements that I really don't like. This grill, is a no no for me.

What a futile post...

You know, not everyone is a consumer... Some of us are enthusiasts, hence we are passionate about this brand, so we share how we feel about this. For many of us , a car is an extension of our personality, an emotional choice... I understand that not everyone is the same.

But, please, enlighten us, on a thread about a front grille design, what should we talk about? What we had for breakfast?
