C&D M440i Xdrive Review
Interesting read. Lots of praise for the 3 series and M340i in general. Also surprising is that the M340i has much better grip?

Overall I found the authors points to seem pretty reasonable, they've previously complained about grip, size/weight, and steering in other 3-series reviews. |

Maybe the added weight plus they basically implied this is not 50/50 weight distribution. I guess we wait for other reviews lol....

True. I'll have to test drive one. If the only issue is steering feel, then it's still going to be best in class just like the M340i (in my opinion).

I'm honestly expecting it to be top performer in its class as Burrcold mentioned but this article made me scratch my head some. Especially the fact that the grip is way down compared to a RWD M340i when you consider the new 4er is quite a bit lower, wider, and longer.
I've said this before too but I also expected the 0-60 times to be quicker for the 440. I know that's not the only thing that matters but it essentially weighs the same as the awd M340 and C&D quotes the RWD M340i at the same 0-60 as the M440ix? The 2 door version should be the quicker and more sports version IMO as the previous gen was marketed etc

edit - just checked BMWusa.com's site, and they have it listed at 53.8/46.2, so that appears to be accurate. |

I recall one review of the M340i where the reviewer called the ride "arthritic" and "harsh", and in another review the same reviewer said the ride was "smooth". In both reviews he had the same car with adaptive suspension. I often take C&D reviews with a grain of salt. That being said, I still do read them and find them entertaining, and still find some value in getting an overall picture of the car. Regardless, with the 4 series, this may also be a case of expectations of a sporty 2 door coupe vs. a 4 door sedan. I wouldn't be surprised if C&D change their tone later on, and once they begin to compare with competitors. Or maybe BMW is late on their annual contribution to C&D

I think the only manufacturer that appears to issue contributions is Genesis/ Kia/Hyundai.

It does get old reading the same "numb steering" complaints from some of these car reviewers. But most journals have praised the M340 so one would think they'd give the M440 the same treatment IF it actually does drive well

Let's hear some conspiracy theories.

Oh boy, this is going to get a lot of German lederhosen in a bunch. Here's a quote I managed to find online before they took it down.
"It's now basically a two-ton car in the top M440i xDrive trim, with our test car placing a substantial 53.8 percent of that mass on its front wheels. Even with 19-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, it managed only 0.91 g of skidpad grip, and understeer dominates. The M440i's variable-ratio steering is short on tactility and has an almost rubbery buildup of force as you turn off-center. The rack's rather quick ratio only amplifies its artificial feel. Factor in the compliant ride from the adaptive dampers and the 4 has veered into grand-touring territory." —-

Why would it be taken down? There's a couple guys on this forum already who's vehicles are on a ship coming stateside.
If BMW didn't want them to review the car, why would they have given them one in the first place? Lol

They obviously want a review, but perhaps they had an embargo in place so they all come out at the same time and shine a less negative light than having only one review out which pans the car.

I wouldn't drop your 3 for a 4. There will likely be very little and insignificant differences that aren't really worth it, not to mention depreciation will likely hurt.
