'21 M340iX spoiler removed, scratches in paint

Wanted to get some opinions on this one. I had the spoiler that came on my 2021 M340iX (option S754 M Rear Spoiler) removed and underneath it were scratches around the perimeter of the spoiler where it met the paint on the trunk deck lid (see pictures - sorry the one picture won't flip, but it gives you the idea). It looks to me like the spoiler was vibrating and its edges were rubbing on the paint surface and scratched through. I spoke to the Service Manager at the nearest dealership and explained to him that it was removed and underneath were deep scratches. He asked that I send him pictures (same pictures attached here) and he'll pass them on to engineering to determine if this would be covered. I asked what his inclination was based on what we talked about and he said he doubted it will be covered, but we are currently awaiting their reply. Interested to hear others opinions or answer any questions to clarify. Thanks all!

That is unusual to have scratches under the rear spoiler. But why did you remove the spoiler in the first place. Just curious

I thought it was very odd too. I expected it to come off leaving betalink adhesive to clean up. I was left with fun surprises around most of the perimeter of the spoiler.

I removed it because I'm not a fan of how it looks. I wanted the rear end cleaned up with the option to possibly find a different look to add on later.

ok, cool. I totally understand going for a very clean look. I guess who ever added the spoiler didn't think you would see that. Hope BMW comes back to you with something positive. Keep us posted

I'm dropping it off tomorrow morning at the dealer for engineering to look at. It's clearly from the edge of the spoiler digging into the paint, the question is whether they take responsibility and fix it for me or tell me it's my fault because I removed the part. Hopefully I'll know tomorrow.

BMW had a TSE engineer inspect and, as expected, they claimed it was not a factory defect and will not cover the repair. The dealership shop foreman agreed it was not from removal, but thought it could have been caused by one of a bunch of different things prior to my ownership (I bought it new with like 6 miles on the car) between shipping and loading / unloading and dealership handling. I'm not going on a wild goose chase, so I'll probably suck it up and pay for the respray. FML.

That looks like it's from removal.
I've seen it many times from being removed wrong, edges are always thin on painted surfaces. So it's very easy to mark them.

Bummer about the situation. But your right. No need to go on a wild goose chase on this. Hopefully the repairs wont be super expensive. Are you going to have the dealer do the respray or an independent shop?

The dealer called the BMW certified shop they use for paint work and got them to work with me on price. They disagreed with the engineer's assessment and helped me out a bit, so not a total loss and the dealership kept my business going forward. $650 to respray the trunk lid. Sucks, but it'll be done with and I can go back to enjoying my car.

before repaint, i would suggest you to go to detailing shop, and let them try to compound the trunklid.. from the photos i cant say if the white lines are scratched through, or only in the clearcoat, or it can even be just the adhesive. but there is a chance that it could be saved, bmw has very hard paint, i dont know how would a lip spoiler make such damage :-O

Thanks for your thoughts. I wish they were shallow and could have been compounded. Most of the scratches were down to primer or metal. Unfortunately a respray was the only option to fix them properly.

Back from paint and new AA Concepts M4 style spoiler mounted. Just waiting on paint shop to receive a replacement black M340i badge so they can mount it and this headache is behind me.

Looks great. I've got that same spoiler waiting for me to install. Good luck on finishing it up.

Yeah, sorry about your problems OP, but that doesn’t look like a factory defect. The factory installed the lip as part of the vehicle, and you chose to have it removed. That looks like the line used to cut the adhesive was pulled down along the edge of deck lid instead up against the bottom of the lip and through the adhesive.

All’s well that ends well. New spoiler will look good.

I thought it may have been the line used to cut through the adhesive too. Since it was already scratched, I tried to replicate the scratches with the line that was used to remove it. I rubbed it as hard as I could on the the scratched areas and the areas not damaged and did no damage at all. If it was from removal, I wouldn't be as upset, but it definitely was not.

Nonetheless, it's all fixed now (after a few bucks out of my pocket and a headache with BMW) and I'm happy with the way the new spoiler looks. If Dinan would just ship my damn exhaust, the rear end can get closer to done.
