Yay or Nay?
I planned on buying a new 2022 330xi but since I can't get the surround view camera anymore (chip shortage), I decided to look for a slightly used one with all the options I want. I found a 2019 M-Sport with 24k miles for $43k. It has every option I wanted: laser lights, surround view camera, spare tire, power lift trunk, HK sound system, etc. The dealer let me do a scan with Carly and it came up as "Very Bad" for the overall health of the car after 3 separate scans. There were no warning lights on the dash either of the times I test drove the car. I realize they could've cleared them and they just haven't come back yet. The first scan showed 17 issues, the second showed 13 issues and the last showed 6 issues. These were all done within a 25 min timeframe. I'll attach the 3 reports.
I tried to research the faults in red and orange but can't find much info on them in layman's terms. You guys know way more about this stuff than I do. Are any of these faults reasons to avoid this car, or would you still buy it? It has 12 months of the BMW factory warranty left. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. |

sounds like the car has been driven through the bottom of the ocean?
make an offer subject to all faults being fixed under warranty, and if any fault is not accepted by warranty that you have the right to reject the offer with no penalty |

There might be an acceptable answer for all of those faults (and there are many), but I HIGHLY doubt that's the case. More likely than not, this car is going to send you to the service department on a regular basis.
Unless, as suggested above, they can guarantee repair to all of it. Even then, will you feel comfortable relying on the car? Will you want to take it on long trips through areas where you'd not want to be stranded? Will every random beep and shake get your nerves running wild? And what about 12 months from now once the warranty fades; how will you feel? I'd pass. There are more options available to you. |

The only thing I would say is that modern cars do log alot of errors even if its not something necessarily faulty.
I remember last year my car went into the dealership for some work and I asked if any errors came up during the scan. He showed me about 5 cars from brand new to a few months old where they reported back upwards of 50 errors but nothing was actually wrong with them. Essentially what I am saying is cars log everything now a days and have strict parameters to work within. If a read goes out of the given parameter it will log an error when actually it may just be an anomaly or one off. If its the exact spec you want and has a warranty I would not completely write off going for it. |

Carly
FWIW I have used Carly on my perfectly healthy and reliable '20 M340i and it too says it is very bad with numerous issues being noted. I take Carly's conclusions with a grain of salt. Not sure what's really going on as to it's a poor analysis of the errors or what. Both this car and my previous '17 340i logged numerous errors which I think are just transient and generally inconsequential. That's been my experience at least.
I also have BMW ISTA+ and it doesn't seem to identify as many errors, and that's the official BMW tool. Like I said, my experience FWIW. |

Honestly, that can be totally normal. BMW's store tons of ridiculous errors. If you read out a car thats been driven for a year and never cleared at a dealer or something, you'll likely see tons of silly, stored things. The only ones that are actually active would come back when you clear the codes. I honestly think this is a horrible way to judge. I've seen brand new BMW's have errors stored.

It does sound like it's been thru the ringer. It's being sold at a Mercedes dealership so they won't fix anything. They just said it's still under BMW's warranty, which is true. The warranty has about another year left.
