M Sport Steering Wheel Quality Issues
Hard to believe, but I am on my second M Sport Steering wheel since April, when my first one was replaced as a goodwill effort by BMW.
Since the first week I drove off in April, these scratch markings and peelings had begun to surface on my wheel around the 10-11 o'clock area. I told my SA that not only did I not drive with my hands on this portion of the wheel, but also I didn't wear a wedding ring or have long fingernails. BMW wouldn't replace it under warranty as they said clearly it was on me, but not that it was replaced under goodwill just a week with it and they resurface. For the life of me I cannot figure out how these get here. This simply cannot be normal in a week's time - can it? I don't drive unusually with my hands on the wheel or anything- I keep it at "9 and 3" or "12". I'm perplexed... any thoughts to the root cause or anyone else having these issues? Pics are attached below... |

I mean I've even tried to use lotion to keep my skin moisturized before using the wheel I've become so paranoid.... |

I had similar damage just a couple of weeks after taking delivery of my F30. I got lucky as my dealer made an error and forgot to order an M-sport steering wheel. They replaced the wheel after the damage had occured.
Because I tend to hold the wheel with both hands in a corner I figured the scratches came from my watch. I stopped wearing one after the wheel got replaced and the damage didn't re-occur. So either it was a bad quality wheel or it was my watch that somehow scratched the wheel. |

Rivets or buttons on pants (usually at pockets, especially on jeans) when entering and exiting can rub the wheel and make those exact marks. If it's at 10/11 o'clock the wheel was probably turned. I have this issue in our Audi and I'm trying to be extra careful in the bimmer. One solution if your seat setup makes entry tight, is to slide the seat back before you enter.

The 2nd and 3rd picture look like its been damaged to me. I don't see how those scraps and scratches could come otherwise. Like the person above said, maybe check when you get into the vehicle if anything on you is causing the scratches such as a zipper or button.

Has to be something you are doing to make those marks, never had that happen on any car. I am guessing when getting in and out of the car. Surprised BMW replaced that for you as it is clearly user induced. Didn't find the wheel to be unusually scratch prone or anything
Be careful out there
