Is that the upcoming 3 series on the RHS? Looks smaller than the F series. Understand that that's an F80 on the LHS so a bit bulkier than a normal 3 but it would be nice if the car shrunk a bit in next gen

Haha, 3ers will never shrink. They'll be the size of an F01 in a generation or two. I'd kill for an E36 or even E46 sized, rwd sedan.

best you will get is an 1er in xdrive (hopefully) Im really hoping they give the US a 1er msport xdrive with a turbo 4 that gets close to 40mpg on the highway. that would be a nice e36/e46 replacement

I tell you this, nothing will replace the E46 generation BMWs.
The way E46 handled, feel, size, engine, over-engineering, etc.
People say F22 2er is the replacement but it is far from it.
BMW began to lose their mojo with the F chassis/code generation.

Agreed, but I'd argue that the E9x and E8x were the start of the decline in driver involvement. Sure they got the N54 and N55, but they lost the mechanical LSD, steering wasn't as sharp as the E46 and weight was sharply up.

I'd love a low mileage E46 ZHP, I think they're probably the last truly memorable non M BMW.

E46 was unreliable. Too many issues. Window regulators, door lock actuators, cv boots ripping, guibo, ofhg, valve cover gasket, double vanos issues, cooling system being all plastic and brittle, rear shock mounts, rust in rear wheel arches on like every northern e46.

Granted. I did love the size and feedback in the wheel and handling like it was on rails and feeling pretty fast for 189 hp. (Had a 325xi) but the problems were too much. My e90 was perfect and didn't experience really any issues and the f30 is even better. While it may have lost some driving dynamics, it makes up for it in reliability.

That list is nothing compared to the E9X and FXX series, IMO. Mechatronix sleeve, HPFP, carbon build-up, grinding 4 cylinder turbos, rear shock mounts ripping out, window regulators, failing turbo, charge pipe splitting open, valve cover gasket, overheating/lack of cooling for performance applications, HVAC vent calibration, premature wear on rear brakes...List goes ON AND ON.

E46 was Camry like compared to the later models.

Hard to tell when one is camo’d and the other not, but no, sadly the G20 will grow by up to 4 inches. Real shame BMW dont do a compact RWD 4 door any more (even tho the 3 is often described by the press as a small executive sedan)

I think it’s just because the F80 is parked at an angle, so you can see more of it than just the rear end.

Unfortunately it will be FWD, and have the new non-logic and plastic sounding steering column. Not good at all!

Give us 2GC with RWD and the "automatic" steering column (that Tesla just copied BMW), then we have a winner!!

You're kidding, right? A 4-door 2 series. I thought that was the whole point of differentiating the 3 from the 2-series.

Correction: based on a BMW blog post, apparently the 2 Gran Coupe is a real thing, although it will be FWD. Is the entire 2 series becoming FWD?

Apparently not, coupe will remain the drivers RWD choice... or so I’ve read...

Funny enough GM literally reverse engineered it in the ATS V and nobody bought it, dead on Arrival.

Praise the e46 all you want, modern buyers want the F30

I would say the E92 3-series was still pretty great. You could walk in, but a base 328 and still get a pretty great compact sedan to drive.

The F-series 328 and 320, on the other hand, were miserable to drive.

That brought back memories about my E46, I had it for 8 yrs and I remember the window regulators were always going out and they were expensive at the dealer. It got to the point that I was replacing them so often that I told my passengers do NOT put the windows down. Seriously I said that because once it went down and you heard that dreaded crunch you knew it wasn’t going to go back up. The worst part was BMW knew it was an issue yet they wouldn’t fix it just replace with same defective product.

I have an m3 competition and i have just picked up an m2 competition.

Drove them back to back today.

M2 is so much nicer to drive. The m3 is just to big.

Bigger cars kills fun in driving! If the new 3 series is bigger again it s more boring then ever!

The best sized M car is the 1m coupe and E30 M3! Everything bigger is a waste of alu and steel.

Dude.. comparing a regular G20 with F80 M3? M3 always has a wider stance and looks longer in comparison. It looks more menacing on the road.

The F30 3-series was easily the worst BMW I've ever driven in any and all guises...even worse than their SUVs. Aimed at the luxury Camry driver who wants an upgrade. I'm pretty sure the new one will be even more disconnected. I had asked my dealer to NEVER again give me a 3 series as a loaner and they have obliged! Lol. The 228 was pretty pitiful as well, to be fair.

The new car is 3 inches longer!!! In car design world that is a massive amount. Bloated and more disconnected: modernity
