2024 M340i order: xDrive or RWD

I’ve been going back and forth with my dealer about ordering a M340i but I’m not sure if I need the xDrive or not.

I live in the southeast so no snow or ice (If there is I’m not leaving the house anyway). Is the xDrive worth the premium over the RWD?

I know it’ll put the power down better but I don’t plan on tracking the car at all.

If you don’t plan on tracking the car and you live in an area where you wouldn’t need it then I would say go for rwd. I’m in the northeast so I kind of had no choice lol

USA is the only country supposedly offers M340i in RWD, all others get X drive only! RWD is the original recipe, that’s what I bought, kept $2k, even though I was tempted moving over from Audi Quattro.

Get the xdrive, you'll regret it later down the road.

Get the X. Can turn TC off and get super loose if you want to. Or put it in DTC and it will let you get mildly loose without killing yourself.

I'll never have another car without AWD
Takes the worry out of driving in the rain (or snow, obviously)
I'd have a Z4 if xDrive was offered

I’m team xDrive all day and I live in Dallas. The immediate traction is intoxicating as it just pulls with so much grip from a stop. Plus, it’s really fun to accelerate even when slippery outside.

I wouldn’t have gotten it back when AWD meant a huge MPG hit but now - it’s a non sequitur for me.

xDrive in So Cal, Orange County. Even though it "never rains in Southern California" like the song said, it did rain a lot this winter, so the AWD helped. Plus the grip and traction on acceleration from stop is amazing. Adds to the experience. Recommended!

You don't deserve a driver's license if you don't feel comfortable driving in the rain with RWD.

X-Drive is a must. Plus its great for re-sale. While you may plan to never move to a place where it snows...life is full of surprises.

I live in Memphis....but there are Winter days...Im happy to have all wheel drive.

Plus, the weather is just getting more and more crazy.

I'm waiting on a RWD order.
I test drove both a bunch of times and felt like RWD had more character. Could be in my head though...

+1!!!!!!! To both!! The original recipe as the founding fathers AND God intended. BMWs are designed as Rear Wheel Drive cars. They offered “xi”, now known as xDrive, to placate the masses.

If a person happens to live where snow is a regular part of life RWD with winter tires is better and safer than xDrive with all season tires (which is what the VAST majority of xDrive drivers use) all day, every day!!! I’ve been driving RWD with dedicated winter wheels and tires every winter in Chicago for eleven winters now and have never had a single issue.

Most track enthusiasts prefer rwd to awd cars. rwd vehicles seem easier to control, to drive closer to the limit, and are usually easier to rotate.

I got my M340i with xdrive because I live In Massachusetts and because I don’t intend to track the car. I don’t want to rotate the car on a public road. I don’t want the car to oversteer on a public road. And I don’t want to be close to the limit on a public road.

If I lived in SC and intended to track the car, I would get rwd. But if I knew I wasn’t going to, then I’d get the xdrive.

i have the X Drive and it will take you well into the limit. but unfortunately it won't let you past that limit, if you want to go past the limit you want a RWD.

i am hoping there will be a solution to disconnect the transfer case.

the X Drive also feels front heavy. i wonder if the RWD will be less so, with less weight over the front. the clever people at the factory spec the car with 225/255 and i'm sure that's great for RWD but the front is way undertired for XD. i dare say it is undertired for RWD but at least you can mount a wider tire without regard for maintaining the same circumference to please the transfer case.

it is annoying when you want to get the car to move around, and as soon as the rear starts to move out the X Drive brings it back and that's the end of it.

but i need XD so i have no complaints. also happy that XD will help me at the limit. just can't go past the limit with it.

Meh, do whatever works. Me personally? I love being able to take some twisties with zero wheel spin and max grip that just keeps pulling the car in the direction I steer. Others would rather be able to slightly drift and spin the rear wheels. Either way, it’s a fun car.

Just returned from PCD - did a lead follow behind one of the instructors in a M340i RWD and i was driving a G80M3 non-xdrive. The M340i RWD can boogie around a track in capable hands. If your skill set is still a work in progress then Xdrive to close the gap, if you are an experienced driver then either would work just fine. Personally, I prefer RWD with good tires (P4S).

Would love to hear more thoughts on this. About to order an xDrive but I owned a RWD 3 series in the past. Won't really be tracking but I do enjoy a good spirited drive and I like the feeling of getting the backend loose a little. Should I reconsider and go for RWD?

I was going RWD only and then thought about the other drivers in my house. I’m getting xdrive. I can’t pretend I’m a great driver anyhow 👀 It’ll be a good fit

sport plus and MDM mode will get the back loose with ease. unfortunately once the back comes out you are at the mercy of X drive and you won't be drifting unless at very high speed on a track i have seen videos of some form of powersliding but won't happen on dry public roads.

in the wet you can drift a bit with X Drive and MDM though I won't recommend it on public roads, for the sake of safety of other drivers.

Thanks! I’m not looking to drift necessarily. I just enjoy that feeling of getting the backend a bit loose around a corner and then feeling it lock up as you countersteer and get traction. Much prefer that to an understeer-y feel where the frontend plows and ignores steering input.

Also I thought MDM was only on the pure M cars? Do we get a similar dynamic traction mode on the 340i?
