Can I change to wider rear tires on my M340i?
Picked up a new M340 last week. love the car, however the tires are all season Bridgestone 225/40/19 all around. This set up doesn't come staggered - anyone know if the back tires can be replaced with 245's or 250's? I'd be interested in replacing the 2 back tires l, getting the same But at 245 or 250. I much prefer the staggered look. Anyone have any knowledge or experience with this? Thx.

On the staggered setup the rear wheels are wider. You have 8 x 19 all around. The staggered are 8 x 19 front and 8.5 x 19 rear.
225 or 235 width is ideal for a 8" wide wheel. Max tire width is 245 however the tire shop may have a nightmare trying to get run flats in that size on a 8" wide wheel. And your only choice is 245/35 which is 3.5mm shorter sidewall than the oem tire 255/35. You may or may not have issues with the speedo accuracy and/or some options such as DA+. I'm just not sure and don't want to recommend in the blind.

Yes, they are 19's but the staggered setup only comes with the sport tires. These are all-season tires. For whatever reason BMW doesn't use staggered as standard set-up when using all-season tires. So on this car it's 225 front and rear... I want to replace the rear all season tires to 245 or 250 so that the vehicle is staggered, but I don't know if I'm able...

Your dealer has a more advanced tire changer as is required by BMW. Most dealers have of one of the center clamp tire changers listed on Hunter Engineering website (or the previous generation). If the shop you choose doesn't have one of these, RUN! Many tire shops have upgraded to one of these (or a competitor to Hunter), but many also still have tire changers from the 80s. https://www.hunter.com/tire-changers

Thanks for the tip. The BMW sales agent at the dealer I purchased from actually told me the set up was staggered. I took her word and didn't bother checking myself until after I drive off the lot ( mistake, lesson learned)...if I do get new tires - installing them is the least they can do to make things right.

Some CA's are great, others aren't worth a pot of beans. Any reasonably smart/trained CA knows on a 3 series the all season setup has same size front/rear. Been this way for years! Not long ago, BMW took their CA's to events to introduce new models. They spent time discussing attributes, training them on the new features, etc. Today, the CA's are typically on their own to watch webinars.

Short story you can't. All your wheels are 8" wide and 245 or 255 width tires are a poor fitment for that size wheel. You'll have to buy new wheels if you truly want staggered.

A 245/35/19 tire should work, it is also available in the same Bridgestone tire.
You are ~1% off the 225/40/19, which is not too bad. Speedo could be effected. Then again, on a M340, I would run a classic staggered summer tire setup and then use this set in winter. |

You can go on https://www.bmwpartspros.com and purchase two wheels at a better price than getting them from dealership. Also get a set of summer tires and call it a day. This way you will have a winter setup and only have to dismount two tires. I get rid of my run flats on my cars and purchase a mobility kit.

Slap on a 255/35/19 and it will look amazing. I have 225/40 F and 255/35 R.
Am going to be putting on 235/40/19 - 265/35/19 next. no risk no reward |
