Porsche wanted a Typ 64 so bad... they made one themselves!! One is on display at the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen. The car isn't finished but you can see the car's "bones".

The Typ. 64 was built to race in the Berlin to Rome race in the fall of 1939. However the invasion of Poland squashed those plans. And the out break of WWII.

If you google something like Nazi world speed record cars it’s interesting the body styling.

They had a black one at the Petersen Museum Porsche exhibit, and it looked like a UFO. It was my wife’s favorite car there.

Yeah... the black car is from the Prototyp Museum in Hamburg. I think it was on loan to the Peterson Museum for their "Porsche Effect" exhibit last fall. I took these photos back in January 2017 when I visited the Prototyp Museum(in Hamburg) to see a special exhibit on BMW ArtCars. It was amazing!!

The auction evidently didn't go well. Not only did it not sell, this Bloomberg article called the event "a joke", "a debacle", "an auction blunder".

That's a shame, I think this is a very special car historically. I understand why some might say it's not a true Porsche, but it clearly has an a place in Automotive History and in the development of the Porsche brand. The fact that Porsche has a mock up of it at their museum reinforces that point.

I think Porsche should attempt to acquire it privately and put it where it belongs.

Sotheby's I think has a problem now. This is the kind of screw up that can do them some real damage.

From what I understand, I believe Porsche isn't interested in the car, due to questionable provenance.

So I’ve done some more reading, and this #3 car was apparently built from #1’s chassis and #2’s engine. It was sold to a race driver who owned it for decades and converted it to right hand drive and wrecked/rebuilt it several times, painted it turquoise, and added block PORSCHE lettering to the nose. It’s since been converted back to LHD and painted silver, apparently among other things.

I don’t know, it still seems like Porsche would want it, despite the above. Hmmm...
