I have indeed, It is a lovely car, drives very nicely. I'm still waiting for that touch up paint from the dealer though, maybe it will turn up before Christmas. I keep chasing them, and they give me the run around.

Are you not going for the Chipex touch-up paint, I thought you couldn't get your paint colour from BMW? Just like they can't supply my arctic race blue. |

I was told by a BMW dealer about 12 months ago that BMW do not make touch-up paint in Oxide Grey. To confirm that is still the case, why don't you call the parts department of a BMW dealership near to you and ask if they can supply one?

They are supposed to be supplying me with some paint that they have made up for me, but I have no idea how it will be supplied, and how long it will last before it dries out. I will need to order some from Chipex for the future, but with all the other things I've been buying for the new car this month, I figured I'd wait for now and see what the dealer comes up with. can't hurt, right! |

Paint finally arrived today. About 30ml in a 50ml bottle. After cleaning out the chip craters with alcohol on a Q-Tip, I've applied the first coat to all the chips I can find. I'm not sure how long to leave the paint to cure before I apply the next coat.
Chipex is not the same sfuff, so I'm not sure I can use their guide, but they suggest only 5 minutes or so between coats, but I'll give it several hours at least, and then leave it for another few hours etc till it's built up over the crater and then maybe a week or so before I get it smoothed and polished? |

Have you been sent only the water based coloured paint, or have they supplied you with the clear coat lacquer to apply over the top of the dried paint as well?

Paint seems to go off very quickly, so about 5 or 6 coats have now been applied and I think I've built it up enough now so the new paint is raised up higher than the surface of the bodywork on even the deepest of the stone chips. |

Pretty much. I'm still building layers of paint. After a few hours it looks fine and you have it built up enough, above the surface of the bodywork, but leave it for 24 hrs and look aagain when it's really gone off and the moisture has evapourated away and there is still a little crater there begging to be filled.
I just added another layer 15 mins ago and now the weather forecast has changed and it will likely rain within the hour EDIT:- It rained 5 mins after I posted this! I have painters taped a bit of clear plastic sheeting over the top of the stone chips for now to let of go off a bit more. It can still breathe to let air in, but will hopefully prevent the water getting directly to the fresh paint for a while. best i can do for now. Grrr!! It's rather frustrating as I have a double garage, but my driveway is just too tight to get the G21 down there. It was meant for cars of yesteryear, when a family saloon was a Ford Escort mkII My 325Ti just makes it with an inch to spare either side. It's fun reversing out w/o catching the wall or the hedge. LOL! Last edited by The_Tok'Ra; 09-24-2023 at 09:23 AM.. |
