Amazon Alexa Issues

Morning!

Is anyone having intermittent issues with Amazon Alexa following the 11/2020.50 update?

I keep keeping the attached message even though everything is signed in. Occasionally it works fine then the next day this message is back again.

Tried reconnected the phone, logged in and out of the app and added the amazon account again to the My BMW app but still no luck...

Cheers

Having a play around I think it only seems to work when the My BMW app is open on the phone.

Kind of makes the purpose of Alexa pointless if you need to open the BMW app on your phone first.

As per the other thread, it didn’t work for me whether the app was open or not. I also couldn’t send destinations to the car from the app.

You definitely don’t need to do that ordinarily but it seems from other threads there may be some server-side issues. Currently working ok for me without any app running on phone.

Mines working again after a Car Reset. Wiped local settings which also restored the Steering Wheel heating rule.

Not sure if it was a backend fix, or the reset that addressed the Alexa issue.

How did you do the car reset? Mine stopped working again yesterday and I did the idrive reset via holding the volume button in and it fixed the Alexa straight away but not the steering wheel heating rule.

I forgot to check it today when doing the TLA coding.

It's in idrive settings-car-reset

Wipes all favourites, seat settings and profile. Some stuff will come back when you login in again, but not everything, so it's a last resort really.

Bingo! My steering wheel heating is back now too

Thanks for that! I was half hoping the HUD was fixed to but unfortunately not. Really pleased to have the steering wheel heating rule back though.

Mines very intermittent. So today it worked all morning then stopped working at say 4pm.

Could you see how you get on for a few days and let me know if it’s worth doing a reset.

What settings does the connected drive forget when you sign back in?

This is another common error message I’ve found too...

Will do.

It was seat and favourite buttons as I recall, plus idrive menu options but easily reconfigured. Seat is the biggie.

I think that message occurs when the car doesn't have connectivity with your phone.

Thanks - appreciated.

Just seems odd that it works fine then later in the day doesn’t want to work and brings up one of two errors.

I think I might just do a reset. Gives me something to do tomorrow I guess.

It wiped quite a bit for me but as IFR, said, seat positions is the most annoying. The rest didn’t take long to put back in.

Most of the iDrive settings were defaulted back to their original settings, 1-8 keys, phone pairing, MyBMW / ConnectedDrive App pairing. Saved Radio stations, Journey info and automated seat / steering wheel rules seemed to be about all that was retained.

I have exactly the same issue mine has Alexa installed and when you say "Alexa" it reacts to the command but when you ask it anything it reverts to the same error messages as reported by a.summers.
I've done a full reset and it's still the same. I've changed my login and password on connected drive site and "my BMW" and re-connected Amazon account all with no change to the error messages.

Looks like it is at the server end that the error is being generated.

Any suggestions would be welcome and appreciated.

Did a full reset of the car this morning. Reset my BMW and Alexa logins also and even paired in the same order as the BMW YouTube video shows.

It’s been better but still had the error twice today.

If you disconnect the phone and connect again via devices it works again but usually only temporarily or sporadically.

Least I have ruled out a set up problem on my side.

Still not got my head around setting this up.

Seem to be going round in circles trying to set up.

Do I need the newer My BMW app or should this actually work with the old connected BMW app?

I did it from MyBMW, but does look like you can do it from Connected. Seems to be easier from MyBMW. Once you’ve done the app side setup, you need to go into the idrive settings and go to voice control and allow 3rd party integration.

You need to be on 11/2020 or newer.

Below video may be of use.

Then enjoy the randomness of if it works or not : )

The other important thing to note is that it currently only works with iPhones and other iOS devices - you can't use it with Android.

I set mine up using my iPad, so the car now thinks it'll do the Alexa stuff, but my main phone is a Samsung so I just the spinning wheel and then Alexa commands fail because the Android app hasn't been updated since last year.
