Does the digital key work with the iOS app yet? Or only the key card?

I assume these cars have the keycards? I think some of the very early x5s were shipped without them

Apple needs to enable NFC to work with it and yes the 3 series comes with the NFC Card

Digital Key needs to make contact with the door in order to work.

So even with an Android phone you have to tap it on the door handle? Isn't that a step backward when the key fob can just stay in your pocket?

The key card works independently from a smartphone. Unlike the Tesla key it uses NFC for a more secure connection. NFC needs to be in very close proximity or in direct contact to work.

Happy to see you can have the mirrors fold in when locking the doors (I assume then that they unfold when you unlock the doors). This was the only thing I wanted on my F30 and I had to code the car to get it.

Hi,

While the card is neat, does the key fob in your pocket still enable you to unlock, using comfort access and start the car? Or must you use the card?

Yes it does. The car is an actual 3rd key

I there an option to only have the NFCcard and not comfort access via the regular keys? CA used to make it so easy for people to steal your car, is it more secure now?

The key fob goes to "sleep mode" after being stationary for 2 minutes. So if you have it sitting on a table at home it won't continously transmit signals. Of course this doesn't mitigate similar risks when the key is moving with you in your pocket/bag.

Afaik you need comfort access for the NFC lock/unlock/start functionality. I guess if you really want it, you can disable the automatic locking/unlocking and just use the NFC functionality. But at that point and if you're worried about security, you might be better off not opting for it.

In addition to comfort access option, the automatic gearbox is required for the BMW Digital Key (NFC card, etc.)

However, I don't know the reason.
