In parts of the upper Midwest at least, Meijer partnered with Tesla to place Superchargers. Works well - food, shopping and clean restrooms while you wait.

Lucid just announced that if you reserve your Lucid Air in 2021, you will receive three years of complimentary rapid charging with Electrify America.

I do believe these networks and partnerships will grow exponentially and quickly.

I believe VW is also doing this with the iD4 and Ford is doing something with their Ford Pass App.

Nice perk, but Electrify America needs a ton of work to get anywhere close to Tesla's Superchargers, their reliability and customer service is poor at best.

That may be true, but you don't need a Tesla-scale charging network to ease the worry of road-trip FOMO. You could have much less sites but if you can connect a good number of potential customers to their regional vacation plans, then you check the box.

I wasn't referring to the size of the network, but rather the poor experience, reliability, and customer service that you with Electrify America which has become a large complaint among non-Tesla EV owners.

A concern I have for those wanting to travel long distances over holiday weekends or peak vacation times.

Backlogs at the charging stations while on the road.

I did see lines at one location (maybe was California). Reminded me of the 1973 gas lines we had, only this time they had a 30 minute or longer wait time before the line moves up one car.

Without a big increase in charging locations, charging stations at each location or much longer range batteries, fully replacing ICE cars with EV's will be problematic.

Wireless charging at restaurants, and motels could help immensely now that there is a standard in place for that type of charging. Also adding wired charging @ these locations could ease the range anxiety.

Ideally, a 600 + actual mile range EV with charging available at all lodging facilities could make long range trips effortless.

Then, the cost for implementing the infrastructure without the current demand is another issue altogether.

Just my $.02

I recently read a piece on them in the WSJ in which they talked about working on improvements to the network and have a system now for identifying stations with issues and addresses them more promptly.

The entire EV arena, including Tesla, is still emerging and it will become much for refined as the EV market and networks grow. Competition is a good thing for everyone.

The new Hyundai Ioniq5 is claiming to be able to charge from 5% to 80% in 18 minutes.

Definitely impressive, hopefully there will be enough charging stations that can provide this.

To add, as we now really start getting into EV's manufacturers are coming out with claims with charing to x percent in y minutes. Which is good but which charge stations can you do this at and how many of them are there out there? The issue with EV's, I find, always comes back to the charge station. You have your average charge station that will charge to 80% or whatever in an hour or however long it takes, and then those super chargers (non-Tesla) are scarce to the point where it doesn't even matter.

Until the charging infrastructure really ramps up, I think that's going to be the barrier as more and more EV's are on the ground. Like someone mentioned above, it's an issue if you're out driving and you need to charge but have to wait because there's a line up.

This is technically true, but remember that most charging is done at home overnight, so EVs typically start each day fully charged.

That said, Tesla’s ecosystem of chargers that communicate with the cars and payment connected to the car’s account is proving to be the template that other EV charging systems are now copying. Those systems’ ease of use will improve over time.

Certainly if one owns a home with a garage (for charging) and not using the EV for long routine trips, the EV is an excellent alternative to an ICE car.

It becomes a bit more problematic if one lives in an apartment or condo w/o the ability to home charge, or if one makes routine trips of 300-500 miles.

Even a vehicle with an advertised range of 300 miles is not one I would trust making a 280 mile round trip w/o concern of getting stranded before getting home (where I could charge the vehicle). If I lived in an apartment or condo, that makes the situation even more tenuous.

If your extended trip coincides with a holiday weekend, you may have to contend with a line at a charging station.

I'm a big fan of EV's for my particular situation. Shorter trips with a home garage charger.

With more and more EV's being sold, charging infrastructure will have to keep pace for EV's to to be as fully functional as ICE vehicles.

They don’t, but they should be working closely with charge network providers to help try to ensure a seamless user experience.
