The timeline of the M3 is really frustrating. You can buy it 2 years after the release of the regular 3 series and just about 1.5 years before the LCI. So either you buy it early (with usually bad deals because it's "new" and maybe with some first year model problems) and it may annoy you when the LCI gets some changes you like or you wait almost 4 years after the regular model was released.

Sure, the M3 is going to have the front of the 4 series and the LCI will not affect the front (probably), but the part I hate the most about the new 3 series are the rear lights and it's almost a sure thing that they will change it with the LCI (maybe the shape, maybe the lighting technology, maybe both etc.).

The fact that it actually may have 2 LCI steps (like the F80) is another story.

This has been the problem on any new car. As soon as you buy the very first one LC is coming not long after.
I always get the very first one and 1-2 later I upgrade for new one.

Not really, if you buy the regular 3 series (or actually almost every BMW model) right after the release, the LCI will come in about 3.5 years, not 1.5 years.

The M4 will probably be available just a few months after the new 4 series was released and the LCI will not be already waiting behind the door.

Okay, since you change your cars after 1-2 years it doesn't matter that much for you. I usually buy (not lease) my cars and keep it for 4-5 years, so it's a different story. It's not the end of the world, but the timeline of the M3 is frustrating.

I meant the M models.
Like I got the very first F90 M5 and now there is some changes already after only one year.

I buy mine cars too, because I don't like to feel restricted. I used to keep mine cars 1-2 years but for past 5 years I average about 9 months.
It's nice to get whatever comes new on the market but it's bed addiction.

This is what I did with the F80... I had one of the first 2015s and then traded for a 2016 ... seemed like the right thing to do. I'll do that again this time I think if I like the updates.

The F32 was available since october 2013, the M4 F82 was released in spring 2014. What I'm trying to say is that the release of the M3 is so late because it has to wait for the release of the new 4 series since it shares its front.

Someone will always have to pay the price of waiting.
Unfortunately they don't release them like they did with X3M and X4M

Not strictly true. The M5 and M8 each came within a year of their Series counterpart, and those Series products were separated by years. Even though they share the same drivetrain and many chassis components, their styling is completely distinct from each other so the sedan needn't be constrained by the coupe's delayed timeline.

If the M3 and M4 were similarly separated, the M3 would be good to a launch at any moment. Now, it's true the 8 Series and M8 are on another tier compared to the 5 Series and M5, but that is a branding technicality - for all intents and purposes the 8er/M8 is the successor the 6er/M6. Even when the latter branding was in use, the coupe and sedan were completely distinct aesthetically.

Actually, the X3/X4 M are a poor counter-example since the X3 has been on the market for years now, and even the X4 is a few months past its first birthday. Yet, their M counterparts just hit the market.

For tight turnaround from Series to M, the new X6 and X6 M might be poised to set a record. The former just debuted and the latter is tentatively rumored to debut along with the X5 M sometime before the end of the year. This, combined with the fact that the X6 itself has come very close to the X5 is set to make these family members something of model citizens within the BMW hierarchy for how to get all product variants out the door relatively quickly.

Sadly, the 3 Series Coupe (now called the 4 Series, obviously) has always trailed the 3 Series Sedan by a little more than a year and a half, and that's not likely to change. However, it is still at least possible that we see the debut of the M3 and M4 quickly after the 4 Series Coupe arrives next July. Even in that event, however, I would still not bet on being able to drive either of the pair home from a dealership until early 2021 at the earliest.

Good thing I am ordering M3 and X6M.
Runs in mine favorite this time

Why not buy the last model year of f80 when there are good deals and it's as good as it's going to get. Then get the LCI of the next gen, waiting out the reviews, bad deals, and first year bugs.

Considered this ... grab a comp or even CS ... not a horrible idea. I do t think I'd get a 3rd F80 tho... just need to mix it up personally. Don't quote me on that tho.

Anybody have any idea when this car is going to be revealed? The car is going to be sold next year, when will they reveal it? I thought it was going to be at the Frankfurt Auto Show but I don't see the reveal yet.

I would not be surprised if we don't see an official reveal until the second half of next year, sometime after the new 4 Series has debuted (which will happen in the first half of next year), and also after the current 4 Series and M4 have ended production.

Quote:

Is it? At this point, I am not at all confident that it will be. We know for sure now that it will share with the M4 again, so it's therefore unlikely it will arrive before the new M4, which won't arrive until after the current one ends production (which happens in June 2020 for the F82 coupe, August 2020 for the F83 convertible).

It had been known for sometime now that what was coming to Frankfurt was merely a concept. Initially, it was reported that it would be an M3 concept, but later it was confirmed that it was a 4 Series concept which was still relevant to the M3 because it will share front end styling with the M4 which is derived from the 4 Series.

Dang! I've been mostly under a rock for the last couple years and thought all the Frankfurt buzz was for the M3 reveal.

I think he answered your question correctly. Current M4 vert doesn't end production til August 2020 so he's saying it wouldn't be surprising to have to wait til then to see the M3/4. And the production 4 series isn't set to be produced until July of 2020, so he's saying it's unlikely to see the M3/4 before we see the production 4 series.

And so was I. Re-read my reply carefully. The release dates of the M3, M4, and 4 Series are interdependent.

After re-reading your original reply, I finally understand what you're saying. So let me get this straight, the 4 series will be able to be ordered next summer at the earliest for a 2021 model year, and the M3 will be revealed next fall for the ordering process to start the following summer (2021) and the first year model will be 2022 on that? Am I getting this right?

Not for a while... there's a sequence of events that needs to happen first:

-production G32 4 series needs to be revealed (I'm going to guess Geneva 2020 at the earliest)
-F32/F33/F82/F83 need to go out of production (oct. 2020 I believe)

So I'm thinking maybe 2020 LA Auto Show reveal (November) and US deliveries in July 2021.

Yes, although I would not use the language "will be able to be ordered". Rather, to be precise, it will be in production starting in July 2020. This we know with absolute certainty because we also know with absolute certainty that the MY2020 F32 4 Series ends production in June 2020, and that its MY2021 G22 4 Series successor will begin production immediately after that (following the standard brief factory shutdown).

When the dealership ordering system will actually allow orders to be placed is more of a regional concern. My guess is that for the US, it will be a month or so before production begins, but it could be sooner. Or, sometimes, because BMW NA tends to be a bit of a hot mess, it could be later than that.

Quote:

The dates are not that firm, but something resembling that will be the case, yes. Your reveal timeframe, at least, is probably correct, and it will indeed most probably be called MY2022. However, the timeline for actual availability could be a few months sooner than "summer". My recollection for the last generation (which was on the same relative timeline, seven years ago) is that deliveries started late that spring for the US. I believe some regions began even sooner, with one M3 buyer in the Middle East taking delivery in mid-March if memory serves.

Furthermore, although I am not betting on this, it is still possible that we see record turnaround time between the 4 Series and M3/M4. I notice that ynguldyn recently revised the end production dates for the F33 and F83 convertibles to August (from their previous October date, which is also when the E93 convertibles ended). That could (I stress *could*) be an indication that they are tightening things up in general with these products, and want to have everything G2x/G8x rolling out of the factories before the end of 2020. This would not only enable very early 2021 M3/M4 deliveries, but it could mean that they sneak in a model year 2021 for the US rather than starting with an early release model year 2022 (for what that's worth, if anyone cares or is keeping score).

I think the thing bmw should be (maybe is finally in a small way?) thinking about is they built their repeat purchase sales base in the USA on a 3 year lease cycle. Dragging M3 launch along with the M4 creates a large gap for those looking to upgrade to M3 or replace current M3 who got into a new bmw from mid 2017 through 2018 without an M3 available.

There is another #NextGen event in June 2020. With more debuts. Just as 2019 had with The 1,3er Touring,X1,M8 Coupe and Convertible. The 8 Gran Coupe and Vision MNext.
