Fixed It!!! After months of trying to resolve a sunroof creak in my 330e... I lubricated everything and .. No change. turned out that by chance I knocked the microphone grill in the roof lining.... That was the issue. Clipped it out, plenty of felt tape. And quiet!!!

Hi all, after several months of this annoying rattle and many hours of afterwork troubleshooting I found a way to eliminate it on my car. Probably each individual problem is different but hopefully this works for you as well.
I must mention that I find this solution while trying to take down the headliner and fortunately it wasn't needed.... anyway, there are many parts involved on the removal of the headliner that I would suggest to don't let the dealer do it unless is absolutely necessary and you have exhausted all the possible options. 1- Unclip the headliner from the sunroof on the corner closer to the passenger door (front), for this I used my plastic tools but if you do it carefully even with couple plastic cards you can do it, see the first picture 2-In the sunroof corner (close to the wind deflector - passenger side), insert a tool to create a clearance in order to insert a piece of felt tape. 3- Insert the felt tape between the sunroof and the plastic where it seats, be sure that is closer to the edge of the sunroof rail. 4- To be in the safe zone, I inserted felt all in the perimeter of the passenger side between the headliner and the sunroof, not sure if this contributed to eliminate the rattle but now I don't want to remove it as is super quiet. The aforementioned 4 steps solved 95% of the issue, the 5% remaining got solved by cleaning the sunroof rubber and the perimeter of where it sits while closed. |

The sunroof on my 2019 330i has been quite noisy over the last few months, sort of creaking noise. Put it into the main dealer this week under warranty; apparently bmw have recently introduced a service kit with revised bushings and lubricant of some sort., All seems good now. Technician hinted there have been ‘quite a few problems’ with the sunroofs on G20…..

This is reminding me of the sunroof situation in my former Mk7 GTI... Except, it seems like there's an actual fix this time.

Will have to ask about this too. Mine went in last week for the side wall enhancement code check, and I asked them to check the sunroof as I did notice some noise more recently. They tried the lubricant route, but said they've had to order a part. Goes back in next week, so I'll ask what they've had to do exactly then.

I had took mine into my former service department to get the roof checked out. SA said they had to replace the visor/wind guard to fix the noise (like a clicking noise), so they had the car overnight. Left the car unlocked, so I locked it via the MyBMW app. The replacement came in, they said they repaired it and my car is all set. SA proceeded to take the car out for a joy ride saying they were "making sure the noises were gone". Their replacement didn't fix jack squat, if they even did one. I am grateful for ConnectedDrive, but needless to say I'm hesitant to start this whole process again with another service department. Gonna give ergarza's instructions a shot. If that fails, just gonna upgrade the sound system to drown out the sunroof rattle.

Copied from another thread…
Quite a few thread on this issue. Mine was creaking quite badly (sounds a bit different to what you are experiencing but it’s not quite so warm over here!) when closed and fully open (fine when in tilt position). Took it in last week where the dealer used a BMW service kit which I understand includes some new bushes/rollers and lubricant and all appears well now. The dealer hinted that there were a lot of similar issues on the G20 and that the service kit had only been introduced recently. Good luck! |

my 2019 320d has similar noise from the sunroof. feels more like a crackling noise - like wind noise or rain. it's intermittent. days when it's constant and noisy, especially at low speeds. other days when it's silent. have had three visits to the dealer, but it was silent on those days and they couldn't replicate it. I now feel that temperature has a role to play. I think it is noisy on warmer days. so booked another visit to the dealer on a late afternoon this week and hoping to reproduce the issue. it's very frustrating.

Posted this on another thread as:
I found this TSB: https://www.tsbsearch.com/BMW/SI-B54-15-19 Not sure if it has been posted but wondering if anyone got this fix done by their dealer… I tried resetting the sunroof by pushing up and holding the sunroof button for 15-20s but that didn't do anything. I am experiencing the rattling/noise mentioned others as well (more of a creaking noise) and recently noticed the back of the sunroof doesn't look as sealed as the front. Very slight difference (see images). Feel free to post pics of your sunroof to compare. |

my 2020 started with the sunroof not wanting to close when I would open it, it sounded like something was getting on the way. took it to the dealer and they tried to reset the sunroof. days later the same problem started to happen and now it was making a popping sound when closing. I noticed that there was a piece of plastic getting on the way. it turned out to be the drain. months later the rattling began again and the drain line had come off from one side. Dealer replaced it and so far after 4 weeks no rattling noises.

Digging up an old thread but wanted to throw my two cents in on the issue. My sunroof has been making a clicking noise since I had the car. Dealership replaced the bug guard and followed instructions on re-greasing the system per 2 different SIBs. All to no avail. They finally replaced the glass and the problem has been solved.

Solved it by using (try not to laugh) Labelo lipstick on all rubber surroundings of the sunroof. I was amazed by the amount of creaks the rubber to rubber could do. Take some labelo on your finger and put it on the rubber parts of the sunroof. You would have to do this every 2-3 weeks but it really helps. Y. |
