M440i test: 0-62, 1/4 mile, sound, acceleration on winter tires

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
We did some runs with the BMW M440i and got pretty impressive times. I have seen people getting under 4 seconds, and would agree it is 100% possible on summer tires and better conditions. Overall, very impressive mile and 0-62 time from this car.

Awesome Video.

The M440i is completely shrugged off by some due to the grille, so called muted lines and curb weight. They are not seeing how well the car performs vs previous models. Sprint mode for example is crazy in the 21 M440i. I have heard only 1 reviewer even mention it.

I absolutely love this car for what it is purpose driven to be: A GT car I can daily drive which loads of power if I want or refined comfort if I need it.

Can you imagine how fast an xDrive M4 will be?

People can like what they want but those who are shrugging it off are really missing out.

Thank you very much! Glad that you enjoyed it.

And yup, it's a shame everyone only talks about the looks of the car, while completely ignoring that the new 4 series might be one of the best driver cars made in years. Superb comfort and refinement and yet a brutal engine and tons of power.

Hopefully as some time passes, people will get used to the looks and will start to acknowledge the other aspects of the car.

The AWD M4 will def do 3.5 from 0-62. Maybe even faster.

The grille is a polarizing feature, not surprising it's taking the brunt of the criticism and discussion.

With that said, everyone screamed when Lexus changed their grilles, too. People are resistant to change and this exemplifies that well. I think giving it a year or two people will start accepting the design language, or at least acknowledging the strengths of the car aside from its aesthetics.

Solid video, thanks for sharing.

We have vastly different ideas as to what constitutes a 'drivers car'.

My 2020 330i Msport, with the track handling pack has this as well. you simply hold the left paddle for more than 1 second and instant power..

For comparison's sake :

2018 Audi A5 :
  • 0-60 in 5.1s
  • 1/4 mile in 13.7

2018 Audi S5 : (most comparable imo)
  • 0-60 in 4.3s
  • 1/4 mile in 12.9

2019 Mercedes E400 AMG:
  • 0-60 in 5.0s
  • 1/4 mile in 13.5

How did you discover that? Is it mentioned in the owners manual? I have never heard of sprint mode before, especially on the 330i. Only explanation I can think of is the car downshifting to the lowest gear when you keep the paddle pulled, making it faster. The 330i doesn't have the 48v hybrid system either.

Cars are a subjective thing but personally it's a hell no I'm not missing out on the 440i.. I don't think the car is bad per say, but it missed the target IMO and it could've been FAR better than what it is today. Is it a "bad" car? NO. It just doesn't ring the bells like BMW used to for a lot of long time BMW owners and/or new BMW owners.

Let's see.. besides the obvious exterior controversy, there's some other things that the car introduced that led it to be less "driver/performance oriented." And the exterior is obviously a huge issue. If it just looked better, people would definitely be more inclined to buy.

- 53-54% of the weight is now at the front wheels (traditionally closer to 50-50)
- Manual isn't offered anymore
- Doesn't offer Rear wheel drive anymore except in 430i trim (how is this helping the brand? when BMWs have traditionally been known to be RWD)
- Weight gain in the neighborhood of 200lbs?

Add the exterior looks to this car and yea you're going to have a problem with the masses.

It has departed from the traditional formula, for better or for worse obviously we all disagree. You love your car, and I wish you the best with the car, but I fail to see what exactly I am missing out on. Brute acceleration to 60mph due to the AWD?

It's the combination of the above listed things (including the looks) that have made me feel I won't be missing a thing.

Any idea the torque number the 48v puts out?

Also you can switch to the highest gear and with another press of the right paddle the car will coast. It doesn't sound much fun so I didn't look into it further.

Listen, I know many people, normal people not the elite Doug Demuros or Matt Farrahs of the world who forgot where they came from, do not like the front end. I get it. I bought mine in Black Sapphire, Shadowline, Black interior. I have a Euro plate and a US plate going drilless under that. You cant even see my grille. But the car is really fun to drive. Its no track star, that is what the real Ms are for.

no, when I down shift in to a lower gear (ex. 5th to 4th) of course there is a little more power available, but when you hold the left paddle shifter for 1-2 seconds you will remain in 4th and the RPM's will sky rocket. I've only tried this 2-3 times, but I can confirm that I have sprint mode. Do you have paddles?

No surprise there. Fast in a straight line, falls flat everywhere else, especially handling with objective evidence.
If that's what you look for in your BMW, this car is for you.

Actually, looking at the specs owners are focusing on, they are exactly the right audience for this car.

A GT car should still be a good drivers car, not a comfortable car that's fast in a straight line, the GT aspect does not excuse the poor handling and chassis balance noted. the guy has a very valid point.

As to the looks, obviously it's not as important for some, to me I couldn't love a car with a face like a bucket of smashed crabs, that's just me, however if it is such a good car underneath (I reserve judgment here) then doesn't that make you even more annoyed they made it so ugly? To me that's even more annoying!
