2020 M340I Xdrive Transmission model for rebuild?

hey guys, so just recently my entire transmission gave out. car comes to a stall when coming to a stop and the 1st and 2nd gear shifts are extremely rough. went to a local euro mechanic that has dealt with b58s before and got a diagnosis done and he said that the trans is on its last leg.

does anyone know either the exact model of the trans or if theres a stage 0 transmission rebuild for the 2020 m340i xdrive? i saw the pure drivetrain solutions one for $3200-3500. but it says that it is only compatible with the z4 and a90 supra.
(also how exactly does this option work? do they ship it to my house and then i get it done locally? sorry for the dumb questions.)

i also live in the houston area if that helps or if anyone knows a local shop that can do a rebuild on that trans for a decent price.

thanks!

Can’t help on the rebuild, but how the hell did you manage to blow the transmission on a 3 year old car?

Are you not under warranty?

I executed a valve body rebuild on my E90, here is the DIY. I assume it will be similar on the ZF8HP. This information could help in your research.

honetly idek. i drive quite a bit with occasional spirited driving. the car was running perfectly fine imo. and then i went to a public drift event and after that it was gone . i agree it was probably my fault but idk what happened.

Are you tuned and runing really high Torque and HP? The car should be under warranty still. No way this is normal for a ZF to be blown

Didn't you buy a salvage car? What did it get salvaged for? Wondering if that is what led to the it dying prematurely. I can't imagine you doing doughnuts was the main cause.

the salvage was at around 20k miles. it was a front end accident. but was rebuilt by a reputable mechanic. i bought the car at 25k miles and drove it till 55k miles. car was literally fine until last week. and then after the donuts the day after the car went out.
i now regret the decision sadly. but at the time, the price of the car and the miles and condition looked really good to pass up. got the car at $35k

i also got a pre purchase inspection before purchasing including a trans diagnosis at the time that all came back positive.

I would make sure your voltage is high enough by checking your battery and the alternator. If the voltage gets too low, the transmission will start to act up.
Good luck.

Puredrivetrainsolutions does m340i trans rebuilds as well. There's a bunch of them with a PDS trans in it. But they send you a pallet and you send out your transmission to them. Racebox in Houston may be able to help you source one.
Note: There are MANY versions of the 8AT trans. There are even differences between the M340i and Supra ones even though it's the "same one". If you go with the replace route, you have to find another one with the exact model of the one on your car.

Doing what? I’m xdrive so I don’t have to worry about drifting competitions and donuts!

Good luck OP, even with everything said it's surprising the trans went. I haven't herd of high HP/torque cars blowing a trans and I can't imagine drifting being hardest specifically on the transmission. Maybe we have stronger axels etc.

Actually, they can do donuts and a little drifting. I wouldn't do it in the dry but traction off, xdrive will slide the rear end out like it's RWD.

Although they are very good transmissions, everything has it's limits. Good friend of mines went out after the car accidentally being put into neutral on freeway and upon throwing it back into drive car tweaked out didn't know which gear to throw it back into and redlined itself which lead to lower gears slipping and inevitably destroying the transmission. Dealer attempted to fix it twice, flew out a ZF specialist and after their "fix" became worse. Not long before they voided the warranty and told him to kick rocks after finding out it was tuned at one point. Long story short after a new transmission from Germany, and a lot of time and money independent shop took care of it. The car had a DP and OTS Tune, no it wasn't being pushed to it's limits. Has been solid ever since, even running a TCU tune (XHP) and is smooth. Just remember that nothing is bulletproof, and they are very finicky it is metal and gears at the end of the day. Keep in mind the fluid is crucial as it not only lubricates, but also keeps temperatures cool and tries to clean any debris as it wears. A magnetic drain plug would do wonders as well as 50K mile transmission service intervals and you should be good. Just passed 40K miles and I can tell at lower temperatures especially when cold gear engagement is drastically slower and abrupt, and when fully warm in traffic sometimes it doesn't know which gears to use and can become clunky and uneasy shifts.

Just thought I’d give an update incase anyone else needs lol:
RaceBox in Houston is super awesome. Partnered with pure drive solutions too so most likely I’ll just be getting a stage 1 rebuild through them.

Still couldn’t find any shop for just stock rebuilds but it is what it is.
