Pilot sport 4s help
Hi all,
I just got an M340i and it came with the run flats 225 front and rear. I’m interested in buying the pilot sport 4s as I’ve heard great things from a lot of posters on here. I’m a little confused though on if I can do a staggered set up. I have the 19 inch wheels. Can I do 225 front and 255 rear on the stock 19 inch? Also, which would be better for traction the staggered set up or 225 throughout with the pilot sport 4s? Or does it not matter? Thanks for all the help. |

Check your rim width first. Michelin specs the minimum rim width for a 255 PS4S tire at 8.5". You may have 19x8" rims on all corners.
However you get there, you won't regret switching to the PS4S. They are fantastic. The run flats are garbage. |

Pilot sport 4s help
Tire/rim size can affect performance, particularly handling in corners. You'll notice it more if the difference in size is significant, and the harder you drive you car. In regular street driving, you may or may not notice any changes in performance.
I find it true that wider tires are more prone to hydroplaning, which is a consideration here in Seattle. For my M340ix I left the stock 19x8 rims on and just went for a modest tire width increase on all corners when I swapped to the PS4S. I attribute the noticeable improvements in ride quality and handling to the superior tire, not the small increase in size. |

If I have 225/40 R19 XL tires on 19 inch wheels would I be able to do a 225 front and 255 rear similar to the builds with the cooling package? Or do I have to do 225 throughout?

You need wider 19x8.5 rims in the rear to accommodate a 255 tire. Check the Michelin site for their minimum/maximum rim widths for a given tire size.

looks like I have 8 inch wheels throughout. Would there still be a huge improvement if I get the pilot sport 4s without a staggered setup and at 225 throughout?

There's another active thread here that disagrees with the performance of the PS4S - worth reading to understand different views. I personally think the PS4S is a substantial upgrade over run flats at any size.
While a same-size tire swap obviously works, if you want wider tires on your 19x8 rims you could go as large as 245/40R19, I believe. |

At least when calculating rolling circumference from the theoretical dimensions the difference between front 225/40-19 and 245/35-19 (which would be the closest standard size) is 1.3%. I would not do that on xDrive. Best to first check the real data for the specific tire models.
