Weird Apple CarPlay Problem
I have a 2019 330
i and, until iOS 13 CarPlay rarely worked. The dealer's genius said to wait until iOS 13 came out and indeed, its does work well since then. Except for a strange situation. I've identified two locations where the where, when I drive through, the phone and the car lose connection with each other. The CarPlay symbol disappears. This isn't that the cellular connection is in use but rather I'm listening to music on my phone and it suddenly stops and only restarts in in a mile or so. I have t-mobile which isn't the best signal, but car play works even where there's no service (that is, using the phone for music that's in the phone's memory, etc). Any ideas out there? It's not a big problem because it goes away in a mile or so, but it's strange. Thanks for any ideas... |

I'm in Melbourne, Australia and have noticed at a few locations where CarPlay would drop out and reconnect as I drive through. I think it's due to radiofrequency interference at these location. Some electronic toll points can do it too. I wish BMW will give you the option of using wired CarPlay rather than only wireless.

uSB. Either way, the signal is not based on your carrier. It could be an issue with Wi-Fi in the car. I haven't had any issues staying connected |

I'm using wifi. I wondered about RF interference. One spot is at the edge of a town, so there could be issues there. The other, however, is crossing a small river with no nearby structures (I think).
I've not had problems at electronic toll points, but if could well be a different system. Last edited by stevej2002; 12-03-2019 at 05:20 PM.. |

This just started happening to me. iPhone XS with iOS 13.3. I just got my car’s software updated. Happens consistently in a construction zone on my way to work. Must be some sort of interference.

Wireless Carplay uses Bluetooth (only) for discovery and reconnection to the head unit. Once connected via Bluetooth WIFI direct does all the wireless Carplay data exchange.
You could be losing the Bluetooth link. There is also a question if BMW is using 2.4 or 5Ghz for Wireless Carplay. Apple recommends 5Ghz as this band has more bandwidth and is nearly interference free. I've not seen clear specifications to prove BMW is using 5Ghz. For those with disconnect issues, first try to delete the Bluetooth pairing of your device then repair it to your iDrive. Might help.

When my CarPlay doesn't work, which is thankfully rare these days, my phone shows that it is connect to the car. It's the car that says it's not connected to the phone.
