I kinda wish BMW made this version as well, 320is:

I never understood why BMW started to put M badges on everything, but stopped with the "is" branding. Personally I would prefer the badge 340is over the M340i one.

Wrt the E90 320is, read once in German car mag that this is a car you don't want to own and certainly have to avoid second hand: no torque, not fast, very high fuel consumption seen the lack of bang, engine noise not ok, harsh ride, not reliable and expensive to maintain.

At the 2019 BMW M Festival in South Africa, BMWSA took the wraps off a limited edition G20 330is.

Production is limited to 300 units only.

The team at the show had no further information, it will be launched as a 2020 MY Car.

It is in all likelihood a nod to the cult status E30 325is which was SA specific as we didnt get the M3.

I had posted some Images on Instagram (@bmw_mpower_fans).

We also got a first look at the M8 GC in the Flesh.
Amazing!!!!!

Less drag and better cooling.

I really also wish they named all the top-tier levels as a 340is, 235is, X4 40is vs the M340i, M235i, X4 M40i, etc

I think your indirect question in the first paragraph ("why call it 'M Performance' when you could slap an 'is' on it") is answered by the second paragraph.

I tend to see the E90 320is as a one time blooper and not a structural "is" problem. For instance the e36 318is was a well sorted car back then in 1992.

The advantage of "is" is that it is exactly clarifies what it is, a normal "i" with some adjustments to make it a more focussed car. It's not a half soft M lacking the focus the badge suggests.

Aaah brings back memories as a person who grew up in SA. I'm not convinced the 330 is the spiritual successor of the e30 325is, the 340i in RWD format would be a better homage.

To give a bit more history on the South African e30 325is models, they were limited edition homologation cars to maximise performance in the very popular Group N standard production car race series.
The first BMW motorsport fettled e30 325i was called the 'shadowline'. This was a stock 2 door e30 with race homologation enhancements, like an LSD, a base spec to keep weight down and the tartan fabric sports seats. Externally it looked like a standard e30.
With the second version group N special the 'Shadowline' name was dropped and it got the extra S on the badge. These cars were fitted with the M technic bodykit including a large boot spoiler, BBS wheels and a special paint range. They had an engine capacity increase to 2.7 litres to give a 20kw (30hp) power increase and later the Evo 2 version had 30kw (42hp) upgrades. BMW dominated the group N series with these cars.

I don't agree that the IS models were a mini E30 M3 replacement. For that South Africa had the super rare 333i. Which was a 325i with a 7 series 3.2 litre engine stuffed into it and sprinkled with Alpina magic.

I agree, they should have kept the IS range instead of diluting the M badge. I'd much rather my M240i was a 240is

100% agree with you. The M performance models are so stupid. If I bought one, the first thing I'd do would be to take all the M badges off

Limited Edition 330is Debuts in South Africa

This would be a great car to own given that the M3 is going to get a polarizing front grill. This car has an LSD and good power and a modern interpretation of the classic bmw design.

M vs M performance vs iS - that old chestnut

(or for some I'm sure it's )

The car looks wicked to me, don't care about the name - hope it reaches other countries too
