Question Large water bottle holder in door storage compartment?

Folks, what is the large round slot in the driver’s and passenger’s door for? It looks like it could hold a liter bottle, but I can’t believe that’s the intent.

For many years cup holders were anathema to BMW. It wasn’t until the F25 X3 that they put Big Gulp size cup holders in their cars.

You can thank Americanization.. yes German cars like BMW used to not come with cup holders. They were low priority because the Germans were of the view that driving should be the sole focus of the driver, not eating and drinking.

Having a bottle holder in the door pocket I think is far more driver-centric than having cup holders in the center console right in front of the gear shifter. IMO, that's very practical and still doesn't betray the German philosophy of driving over drinking. I like keeping my drinks out of the way. I mainly use the cupholder to hold other things.

I cringe when I see people eating and drinking in their vehicles.

My cupholders are used to store random shit like my phone or keys during the drive.

I admit I have a large water flask that I fill up and put in the side cupholder for long drives (1 hour plus) because I drink a lot of water. But thats it. Ok maybe red bull in the cupholders sometimes...
