Maybe I'm weird. I had an F80, and currently the X3 M40i. Don't need an M3 wagon, at all.

Do you have an Ariel Atom or a motorcycle? If I didn't have a kid, a dog, various bicycles, a tent and assorted camping items, skis, etc, I'd have a Ducati and make fun of guys who wanted to do stuff. But I need to carry stuff and I don't want an SUV or a compromised sedan.

BMWUSA didn't want to sell me an F31 that had at least one of these three desires, a reasonable amount of power to offset the dumpy F3x weight, a manual or rwd. So I went with two out of those three and bought a GTI. I'd say that fwd with a limited slip has actually proven to be no worse than one wheel drive that BMW has been using on non M cars anyway.

So everyone says on the BMW/MB/Audi sites. Then they bring something like the E63 or S4 Avant and they sell less than 1000 per year or with the E63 less than 100.

I am with you and love wagons/Tourings/Avants and even own a 328i Touring right now. Would love to buy an M3 Touring, but it would be an absolute sales flop here unless they can justify US crash testing costs etc for 1K sales per year.

It's all about choices. I just had my 4 summer wheels/ tyres in my F31 on Monday. Could I have fitted them in a sedan, probably, but not as easily or gotten them out easily.

We also take a family vacation to the beach- I would need a roof cargo holder without the Touring.

Finally the F31 has the dual opening rear hatch. Really convenient feature not available on other wagon/ estates/ tourings !

And here we are on page 7 in a day about the car no one wants!

Every time I get into a conversation about my car I get 'I love wagons' I just people would buy them to make this stuff possible. Most SUV's don't have much more space inside over the wagon.... seems to be mostly 'exterior ' size!

You are basically driving a lower power output, overweight M3 wagon. The X3 is a 3 series wagon with extra ground clearance. Someone may prefer a better handling version of your car, which would be a wagon. Maybe you don't need it, but that's why BMW makes many different models to suite people's needs.

I’ll believe it when I see it! The head of the M division has already said that an M wagon will never happen, as they’re focussing more on M SAV/ SUV’s instead.

Oh I can assure you they do their research, basis which they have built their offerings portfolio for the US market. Like it or not, Americans like SUVs, and that's what sells here. Yet there is a large enough segment of the market that likes sports sedans, which is what justifies offering the sedan.

The question you'd ask is: with the line up of SUVs that BMW has in their offering, what would they gain by offering the wagon here? Most of those who'd want a practical car would still opt for the SUV. Those who'd want a sports car would then have a choice b/w the wagon and the sedan, now you have product proliferation, inventory costs, etc. The business case could be made if BMW sold incrementally (and sufficiently) more products with this new offering to justify adding the product, without cannibalizing their existing products, potentially more profitable ones. You can be certain the reason why they don't offer it is because they have done their research, and they don't have a business case for it

Look at it another way: if they had a wagon M, those on this forum who express a desire to buy the wagon would get one (count me in). Since they don't offer it, we all bought the sedan.

Love the idea of an M3 Touring

BMW has never officially produced an M3 Touring, but insiders at the firm suggest that it's finally being considered as a rival to the Audi RS4 Avant and Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate. The development costs would be minimal, allowing BMW to justify launching a load-lugging M3 in European markets but not the US, where the estate isn't generally favoured by buyers. But not US or Canada bound? that's a shame...we love our sport wagons in the great white north

One that is also easier to get in/out of, has better front/rear clearance for parking, better outward visibility and the traction benefits of xDrive.

The X3 is 3800lb versus 3er wagon at 3300lb so -500lb on the benefits your suggesting. M models will be different of course.

I'd rather a sports oriented car versus a sports oriented SUV. Each to their own.

If they bring it to the US I'll forgive the unimpressive styling of the G20.

Might be time for bmw to enter the fast wagon game. Benz makes the e63 wagon. Could be a good alternative to the suv.
