iDrive 8.5 and 9 announcement

So I saw this article on the home page today about the new iDrive at CES.

https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1981862

That's great and all, but is it really true that the 2023 LCI 330e I picked up less than a week ago won't get an update? That's pretty messed up it it's true, IMO.

So they do a mid year MSRP increase, but won't do a mid year OS update? I didn't get to reading all of that post's comments yet.

Welcome to how the rest of us feel. I mean, they just released iDrive 8. At least with my 2020 330i, iDrive 7 was the latest OS for 3+ years before 8 hit the market. With the X1 getting 9 in a few months and the new 5 getting 8.5 this year, that means that 8 was the latest OS on the market for less than a year.

Really not a good idea having so many versions of idrive. All this means is there will be less support and features being added to old and existing idrives so less updates since developers will focus on newer software.

So now also the 1-series looses the iDrive controller (wheel).
At least the text for 8.5 says "controller".
(I'm happy I got an iDrive 7 while it was available

So do we know if they will update OTA idrive 8 to 8.5? i mean, dang, i just got my 2023 model two months ago with idrive 8. my wife's new 2023 x5 still has idrive 7. i agree nuts to have so many out there from just 2023 models alone! 7, 8. 8.5 and 9!

iDrive 8 was introduced in November 2021 (i4 and iX).

Very glad I remain on iD7, shame it seems BMW are doubling down with iD8.5/9 especially on things like the climate controls which really should just be physical. What's with all the useless "flair" in the UI too, creating visual clutter? If I'm driving along I should be able to very easily glance and get the information I need - less of the "aero" styling would go a long way to ease that, but again it seems BMW are pushing that further upon us.
