Tracking vehicles built at the San Luis Potosí, Mexico assembly plant?

Has anyone tracked an order for an m340i made in Mexico to be delivered to the US? How did the timing compare to a made-in-Germany order? Do they ship via the same US ports? (I'm in Texas; it would be ironic if it has to ship to the east coast then back.)

I've made a deal on one that the dealer already had ordered. The web site has shown it in the "ready for transport" state for close to a week now. Is that normal?

Here's my NA m340i build from the SLP plant:

Order Received: 2/3
Scheduled For Production: 2/4
Production Begins: 2/4
Exterior Body Assembly Begins: ?
In Paint Booth: ?
Entering Assembly Line: 2/14
Assembly In Progress: 2/17
Quality Check: 2/17
Final Assembly: 2/18
Ready For Transport: 2/19
Awaiting Carrier Assignment
Dispatched From Factory
At The Port
In Transit
At The Dealership
Vehicle Delivered

For what it's worth, a genius I spoke with said they usually sit at Ready for Transport for about 8 days. He said that's an average time and not a firm guideline.

Also, he said they truck them into the U.S. and then they hit a ship somewhere in TX and then get delivered to a port. There was some uncertainty in his voice when he told me that, so I have no clue if that's truly the case. But I checked out some of the monroney stickers of NA builds at the GA dealer I bought from and they have Brunswick, GA as the port of entry. Guess time will tell!

It seems bizarre that they would transit through TX to GA then back to TX. But I guess C&BP is involved, which can explain many bizarre things.

Yeah, that was my guess too. Probably some legality stuff involved. Whatever the case, the process seems pretty quick from order placement to delivery, so that's a plus.

8 days in "ready to transport" seems different that what people have listed for German production cars. Mine has been in that state for about a week now. I suspect the post-production timeline stages don't quite line up with the real process for Mexican production cars.

It's now been in "Ready to Transport" for at least 8 days. (The above mentioned average for Mexico production).

8 days for me too. I will say that the image of my car that appears when I track it changed to my actual car configuration instead of the generic placeholder. That's something I guess lol.

Mine did that yesterday. (at least 9 days for me, now.)

Can anyone confirm approximately how long from "ready to transport" status to "delivered?" Thanks.

I haven't found anything definitive, nor have I found full details about how to track a car from the SLP plant. Mine has now been "ready for transport" for at least 10 days. (I say "at least" because it was already in that state when I first started tracking.)

My SA still says 1-2 weeks. That's been a rolling 1-2 weeks for the last 2 weeks :-)

I was told that my 330i was completed last Friday (7 days so far) and it is waiting to be taken to the port at Tampico to be transported by ship to Charleston, SC then trucked to BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg, SC. I agree that waiting can be stressful.

If I had to guess, I'd say cars will go out this week from SLP. Fingers crossed! As long as it comes before another credit inquiry is required I'll be good.

That seems like a remarkably slow way to get the cars to the dealers. Especially for dealers in states that border Mexico. Maybe they are trying to be fair to the cars from Germany by making sure the SLP cars don't have too much of a transit advantage :-)

Last edited by bacampbe; 03-01-2020 at 07:25 PM.. Reason: Recognizing Tampico is much closer to Charleston by sea than German is :-)

How often are they required to do a credit check even if you've already been pre approved?

That could be....I did request a German build, but was told by dealer that BMW wasn't building 330's for US delivery because of BMW North American mandate to build 3 series for US, Canada, and Mexico. My paperwork shows my POA is Charleston, SC....so i wait.

I was told the initial pull is good for 60 days.

Anyone have a guess of the shipping company used to get the cars to Charleston?

Now at least 15 days in "Ready for Transport". I am starting to suspect a problem (hopefully with the status reporting, not the transport). I guess I need to try calling the Genius line.

If I had to guess, they're likely stockpiling cars to ship. I'd imagine the ship only makes that trip a couple of times per month, so having a full load maximizes profits. As long as it gets here before another credit pull is required I'm good, but I'm still getting impatient lol.
