No star on these . Just " plain " Contis.
BMW didn't supply these. Only 18" setups. So I put these together myself.

Opinions on fitment/style?

Hello everyone!

I'm trying to vet a winter wheel and tire setup for my car on order. I will be running the staggered 19" 792M in summer and want to downsize to square 18s with slightly larger width (235 vs. 225) for improved traction and benefit from a taller sidewall for winter compared to stock. I'm new to the whole offset concept and I'd heard that only some 18" as a result work on the M340i because of the brakes. My configuration is a BSM RWD without the ZTK package.

I've found this combo of BBS XR and Pirelli Sotozero 3, and ran a simulation versus stock 18" 790M (225/45/18 ET25) through this site:

Here's the specifics:

BBS XR, 18x8 ET28
Pirelli Sottozero 3, 235/45/18 94V with Self-Sealing

On-car BBS XR pics on a BMW hard to find in the wild, but the design is very similar to the BBS CH-R, here's a view:

The wheels seem very similar fitment-wise to the BBS SR I've seen a few posters with, just the offset seems to be different (SR is ET30, XR is ET28).

Also curious what the community has to say about self-sealing tires, the cost difference is negligible and they seem to have none of the drawbacks of runflats, just are very rare. Seems like an ideal feature for a winter tire.

Appreciate your insights!

I went with the bbs sr from tire rack and used my 245/45/18 Nokians. Fits great!

I would think 18x8 ET 28 with 235/45/18 should fit with no issues. If Tirerack lists the wheel for the car, then it fits. 235/45 is of course slightly wider and taller than OEM but will be similar to my setup, actually 0.3% shorter diameter, and I have no issues. You can always call Tirerack to discuss if you're not comfortable pulling the trigger.

Thanks very much, will definitely get Tire Rack's opinion when I do pull the trigger. This configuration is not specifically vetted by them on the site for our car but it seems to make sense that it would work. They had no issues matching the tire size to the wheel size so it's just down to any quirks on the M340i specifically.

So is there a rule of thumb for what offset is needed compared to OEM? Or does it just have to be measured in each case?

The lower the offset number the more the wheel pokes outward from the brakes. I would not buy any wheels with an offset higher (more inward) than OEM, especially considering brake clearance. How far you potentially can lower the offset depends on your fender clearance and your personal aesthetic taste. On most cars you're safe to decrease offset by 10mm and can go farther out of there is fender space and you like the look. People who use spacers effectively lower their offset by pushing the wheel out 10-20 mm. I personally don't recommend using spacers because they can be a hassle in multiple ways.

Offset of 30 is the lowest I would want to go on an 8.5 wheel up front. Leaving very little room for any tire at et35. The 8” wide with et. 30 fits the 245 wide perfectly. Et25 would have been a little better up front for a more flush fit but, that wasn’t an option.

my new all season rear tires that I've bought off tirerack came with a lot of rubber hairs on the sidewalls, anyone know why they come like that? My front tires that came with the car does have have that many on them. What can I use to easily remove them?

Burrcold those are nice replicas! I checked out Tire23 but they don’t have an online catalog of replicas so I may have to make the trip to Mississauga.

This is my first post...

I just picked up my 2020 330, off the lot, and the one thing I couldn’t get was a staggered performance setup. Instead I’ve got the 791M Black A/S. Love the rims, just wish they were staggered. Bought the 796 M winter package @ 20% off, but haven’t taken delivery of them yet so figure they can be returned for a refund.

Any thoughts on the feasibility of throwing some winters on the 791s and using them for the winter, and then buying a staggered performance set-up for the summer? This is a lease so I don’t want to drop a ton of 💵 But the 796s are already costing me $3200 tax-in. Think I can I find a suitable summer set for a similar price? I really like BMW wheels... including the 792. I’ve never bought replicas before, or after-market for that matter.

If you really want a dedicated sportier setup for the summer, I would definitely throw winter tires on the 791 rims (keep the OEM tires for lease return). There are a ton of options for a summer set but it can get pricey.

On the other hand, if you don't mind the 791 and all season tires for summer, definitely head down to Tires23 (talk to Terry and tell him Chris sent you). He will show you lots of options for winter rims of all sizes (I went with a 19" rim because we have "winter tires" on for a big part of year that I wanted something that looked good). Don't worry about them being replicas, they are great quality and totally worth it for a winter rim.

Is there any reason to stick with a 19" winter setup on this car vs 18s?

I can either get a whole 18" setup or put snows on the OEM 791Ms (which weren't my first choice) and get a dedicated summer setup next year.

Many folks (myself included) prefer 18" for winter tires for two reasons: (1) generally speaking, an 18" snow tire is less expensive than a 19" comparable tire, and (2) having a bit more sidewall makes for a more comfortable ride, and less chance of damaging the wheels, especially in the more pot-hole laden winter months.

I went 19" purely for aesthetics and I don't need ultimate snow/pothole protection.
