So due to BMW typically underrating in reality it'll probably be closer to 400hp+ and 4sec. Amazing for a non-M car.
I really hope the M3 version will be out by Feb 2020 so I can get one, otherwise I guess M340i. Also I can't wait until later 2019 when this forum will be the owners only forum. The people complaining and who will never buy one will have emptied out by then. |

This design looks like something straight out of a Japanese playbook

That's the only styling cue I'm having a hard time getting over. Some of the other stuff I don't necessarily love, but I understand why they did it. Not that part though. To paraphrase Zoidberg, that is bad and they should feel bad.

An xDrive will be the ultimate daily (at least where I live), and the fact that the adaptive M suspension will have the same ride height as the RWD variant is just icing on the cake... |

The G80 should be a sub 4 sec car. I'm also glad to hear that it will retain the double slat grill.

Anyone got any guesses on the price bump? Current 330 -> 340 is about $5k, labeling this as a M340i makes me think it's going to be closer to $10k.

Overall I like the new 3.
And the available information bodes well for a return to form for THE Sport Sedan. The only thing that I really don't like is the unfortunate dull gray rear bumper insert for the Msport. Why BMW? It's like they wanted it to look ugly purpose. Oh yeah, my bad, it was chosen on purpose. Just paint the freaking thing in body color. That would have been much classier and infinitely nicer. The new digital gauges look interesting, but I don't know if I'm sold. I'll keep an open mind and see it in person first. My initial impression is that change for change sake doesn't usually make things better. I have a digital, vertical dashes, fuel gauge in my S4 and I do NOT like it, it's very awkward looking. Seems a solution for a non existent problem. Unfortunately for me the timing for release took too long. I'll enjoy my new 2018 S4 for now, and in 3 years I may, very likely, be back. |

Some Beauty, some beast.
The design is fresh, yes. It is inherently BMW and travels in a new direction. Is it cool? Sure. Does it break any new ground in automotive design? Nope. This design feels a bit guilty of what Kia/Hyundai are normally accused of...melding together design languages from other automakers and ending up with a homogenized aesthetic. Seems like most folks are asserting that the rear appears very Lexus-like and I'd say that the shape is not, however specifically the taillight shape and coloring is.
As for the grilles, they are bold for certain, bordering on clumsy, but not quite. As for the slats and how they appear to be mostly closed, it gives a very odd character to the over-sized grille. All past grilles have been open, in that, the space between the slats was not filled and allowed air to pass to the heat exchangers/radiators behind. Now that they are either mostly obscured, or partially open (active) dependent upon engine state, this design element seems to add a garish and rather tacky quality to the otherwise sleek and elegant nose. The rest of the exterior is appreciably evolutionary and presents no other glaring merits or demerits. The availability of laser lighting is nifty, and how one can denote each lighting option based on the curve of the halo is welcome. The interior fit and finish looks Audi-esque in its barren elegance. Everything appears cohesive and inviting without being overwrought or flashy. German austerity is alive and well within this cockpit, with a little BMW flair hidden in the nooks and crannies. Is this the best possible 3 to bring to bear? Meh. Is it good enough not to alienate current owners and attract a few more buyers, probably. Does it elicit notions of canyon carving and scintillating exhaust crackles reverberating into Nature? I think the M340i does. The rest are nice, if not particularly exciting. This is just the beginning, let's see where things go from here...
