Hopefully your car is not affected by this, but I'm curious to see if you get anything in the next 1-2k more miles. Please share any updates with us when you can. Really appreciate the info! |

Have you gone to the dealer? If yes, what was their response?

It is a turbo high performance engine.... Of course it will burn oil especially with the way some of you drive these cars.
If my car was not a lease, I would of changed the oil at 2500 then at 5K and then do oil changes every 5K miles. In my case, I will go buy couple of quarts of oil and top of as necessary. Not worth my time to bother the dealer for this. Now having said all of that, I am at 2K miles and oil level is still at max.

You can argue with your dealer if it is normal or not all day long and their response is going to be the same: -Normal. New car with a turbo engine will burn some oil. I had BMW dealer argue with me that 1 qt for every 1-2K miles is within spec. Not sure what you guys are looking for as compensation? For a new car, new engine? That's not going to happen. That's why you lease these cars and happily return them in 3 years. If you own them, change your oil every 5k miles and don't look back.

Subjective diagnosis makes it difficult for them to substantiate a bill to BMW. The only other option is a class action lawsuit but everyone, cumulatively, would have to prove intentional negligence and a defect on BMWs part. https://www.classaction.org/news/bmw...ss-action-says https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-...urning-defect/ |

This website states their table of "acceptable" oil consumption data from BMW is 1 liter per 1,500 miles for B58 lol. It sounds pretty ridiculous but if it really came from BMW, I would assume the dealers are told the same thing. It also talks about "break-in" period right below their chart where BMW advises not to be too concerned about oil consumption during the first 10,000 miles. I really dislike how this car initially burns/consumes oil, but I wouldn't waste time with the dealer if they are reluctant to look any further into the car.. Luckily my dealer has been helpful and did a full measure of the oil when they drained it during my last visit. They did a complete oil change during the visit and asked me to return after 2,000 miles to measure the consumption. Fingers crossed that the "break-in" is really true. FYI, I topped off my oil the first two times the warning came on and even bought a case of oil to avoid inconvenience of visiting the dealers. I visited the dealers when the warning was not even on and they still helped me. If anyone is in the Socal area with the same issue, I would recommend Irvine BMW |

See! that's the SA told me when I went it for the low oil warning. Anyway, I will know eventually if it gets to normal cater first oil change.

I did have a 2013 N55 135i but that's when the N55 was fairly new and I did not break in that motor; I did burn outs from the time I left the dealership. That 135i N55 engine burned a quart between change, like roughly around 3,500. Nothing as crazy as this B58 in the M340i. My brother owns the M340i but he lends it to me whenever and within a few days of hoonin' it, the low oil light would ding. Mostly when left in Sport+ and which might sound weird but when you unleash a lot of burbles it eats up the oil. However, the performance would remains the same, without a hint of hesitation of loss. In my research of this issue, it's stated that this is TU version of the B58 in M340i. A lot of the oil that it burns up being use up to cool off and lubricate the heavy-worked turbo charger and not necessarily a defect with the motor operation. There is too many similar complaints of it burning oil for it to not be a mass defect by now and BMW not taking responsible. This is a company that have lawyers watching lawyers so they don't become liable for any issues. That in itself puts me at ease because at this juncture, there is only so much recourse you have address oil issue. |
