On my daily 17km commute this morning I drove without the music off for a change just to check out the environmental noise after reading this thread. I have to reiterate that I must be one of the lucky ones. Not a creak or a rattle on this drive and that's over a highway that is riddled with potholes and snow plow damage. It's unfortunate that others have had more issues. Hope my M340 remains this solid over time.

I have had my M340 for 6 months and 6,000 miles now and have no squeaks/rattles (yet). I expected to have some at this point based on what I have read on these forums but I am pleasantly surprised although I don't expect it to be squeak/rattle free for too much longer but who knows.

Just under 1000 miles on mine and I'm definitely starting to get rattles. It's a little hard to pin point where they are coming from exactly while driving but it seems like there is one under my passenger seat, one near the passenger door and one near the driver side roof/pillar area? I can live with one or two but if I'm in sport plus it can get a little out of hand

Small update got my car back, they had it for 3 days... not only did I get a software update.. but apparently they were able to confirm the creaking, way more quiet now can actually enjoy!! Get really tiny creaks over hard bumps but overall very impressed!! I guess they used felt tape and put them on contact points.. whatever they did it lowered the interior noise by a lot... I guess it's a luck of the draw whether you get a quiet one or not, I thought mine will be well built since it came out of Munich plant and was one of the extremely early models but oh well!

I'm referring to the assembly of the vehicle here and not the overall experience. There are some BMW design choices (such as how auto stop/start is implemented) that I feel are definitely flawed. There were some speed bumps getting the WiFi hotspot working which I think were AT&T's fault. Still figuring out some Carplay issues, connected app issues etc, ideal iDrive settings etc. But just the tangible components of the vehicle -- fit and finish is like nothing I've witnessed. I think some folks assume that if a German car is not manufactured in Germany, it will be of lesser quality, but the Mexico plant is not an "outsourced" operation -- it is ultimately run with the same quality standards as their other facilities. If there is a regional difference at all when it comes to final assembly, it would come down to the work ethic of individual factory workers, especially the quality control team. Although I don't usually speak in terms of cultural generalities, the experiences I've had with laborers from that region working on my own home has left me with an impression of outstanding quality and work ethic from Mexican contract laborers (better actually than their American counterparts who seem to have a more entitled attitude)... very strong work ethic and commitment to quality. I bet they are absolutely thrilled and thankful to have a job that lets them build BMWs. |

It's not where it was built.
It's the climate it's operating in. It's how you drive. Environmental factors. It's a machine. It's never going to be perfect.
