Tire Rotation vs Wheel Alignment

I have a 2019 330I X drive and took to dealer today for first service. Delaer wanted to do wheel alignment as opposed to tire rotation. I the the norm with BMW vehicles with drive? Do you not rotate tires anymore?

if the tires are staggered there is no need to rotate. that goes for all models.

Obviously staggered = can't rotate BUT is it ok / advisable to "swap" left with right?
Just to even out the wear over the life of the tires.

Not if it is directional tread!

No, of course I'm referring to non directional or asymmetrical tread only.

I switch right to left on my directional tires on my older 05 BMW only for a few hundred miles to offset the cupping and annoying road noise. Done this for many years, doesn't hurt anything.

With xDrive the odds the OP has a staggered setup are really low.

OP, BMW has had an official policy of not recommending rotation for many years. Therefore, dealers are going to poo poo the idea. They’d much rather sell you an expensive alignment.

It is not uncommon for gearheaded BMW owners with a square setup of non-directional tires to rotate their tires and there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing it. So, if that describes your wheel/tire setup, rotate to your heart’s content and don’t give it a second thought.

I have a M340i xDrive with the Pilot Sport 4S* staggered setup 225/255 and I was actually wondering if it is beneficial to swap left with right on the same axle to keep the tire wear even.

I have Pilot Sport 4s* so they are not directional.

As far as wheel alignment - I would only do that if something happened - hit a kerb or something that could knock it out, or if I see some uneven tire wear that may suggest alignment is out. I would also get a proper alignment each time I get a new full set of tires. But otherwise tire rotation really has nothing to do with an alignment and I am confused why these two are talked about as if you can do one or the other.

BMW recommends an alignment at every service interval for $225, which is completely unnecessary. It's appears to be something they have to recommend regardless. The tech who was performing my oil change sent me a video of all the things he was inspecting and notes that all for tires had the same tread depth and even wear at 10k mi. So obviously I didn't need an alignment.
