iDrive 8.5

I recently bought a 2024 M340 and has iDrive 8. Was wondering how we can check if the hardware will eventually be able to support iDrive 8.5?
Or I wonder if there will be a way in the future to do a software update via a third party as older F30s were able to update to ID6 from ID4.

No - there is no upgrade possible to iDrive 8.5 for current G20. May be the second LCI will include compatible HW for LCI2 cars.

The new operating system 8.5 will only be available in vehicles with the HU-H5 head unit.
Customers that have BMW Operating System 8 with the HU-H4 head unit WILL NOT be able to move to BMW Operating System 8.5. Also, due to the multiple hardware, software and wiring harness changes, a retrofit option from the HU-H4 head unit to the HU-H5 head unit WILL NOT be possible.

Where can I find out which head unit I have?

drac - there is no G20/21 with newer HU than H4. H5 could be installed in LCI2.

Having owned cars with 7, 8 and 8.5 recently, it's a real shame that BMW can't be bothered to deliver an upgrade to idrive 8. Even if some of the functionality can't be supported, I find it hard to believe they couldn't deliver an 8.1 so that we can benefit from the improved user interface - particularly the button locations along the bottom.

You have an MGU21 ( head unit high 4 ).
No need to check anything, all g2x have it from 07/2022 to 06/2024 build dates.

From 07/2024, they will be built with the MGU22 ( head unit high 5, idrive 8.5)

no so iDrive 8.5

really hoping for 8.1 at least

Does anyone know which head unit (MGU21 vs MGU22) and ID is currently being equipped in G20?
I have m340i on assembly line this week (03/2024) and my Salesman told me that I'll get 8.5 ID. I thought they wanted to change that in LCI2 in July.

Still HU-H4 (MGU21), only july onwards get 8.5.

Thank You. I thought the same, especially that Salesman also told me that current 5 is being equipped with ID9, which I think is only in x1/x2.
Where did you get that link/page?
