I see a step back as far as brakes. Fixed calipers up front with sliding calipers in the rear.

heavily considering stepping up to the new M5 but still would much rather the size of my F80. If the new G80 gets the trick AWD (which I believe is all but confirmed, no?) and an interior that gets anywhere close to the quality of the new F90 I may stick to the M3.
Debut set for the 2019 IAA.

A fixed caliper has pistons on both sides of the brake disc so the visible portion of the brake caliper is a solid piece of metal, these are usually the nice looking calipers with a logo painted on them like the F80 M3 for example. Look at the front brake in the latest pictures posted, the visible caliper looks like one big chunk of metal.

The rear brake caliper allows you to see the brake pad which means there are no pistons on the outside of the caliper, only a single piston on the inside. That rear caliper is a floating caliper.

I don't want to get further into this but just want to point out that I posted that particular dyno because it was easy to grab in a quick Google search. My shop does not use any correction on our dyno runs for modern engines precisely because they do a great job of self-correction and dyno correction gives unrealistic results. The early F8x vehicles coming into our shop around 2015 were some of the first that made us move away from using corrections, we noticed that the first four put down the exact same peak power (within 2hp) as one another in completely different weather conditions & temperatures and we were very impressed. The results I was talking about from several F8x M3/M4s we have dyno tested over the years were non-corrected and they still put down 355-360 rwhp at peak vs my personal E92 M3's 311 rwhp and my M3 happened to be the strongest stock E92 M3 we ever had one our Dyno Dynamics.

As I said, a step back, electronic parking brakes are not an improvement in my opinion. Also there are other ways of adding an electronic parking brake without using a sliding caliper. Look at the Giulia, or practically any new Porsche, for that matter.

Will it build on the current M3 with more carbon components?

The 2019 IAA in Frankfurt is in Sept 2019, so yes, a likely 2020/2021 model year for launch

I'm particularly opposed to the floating rear caliper, I bet it is also single piston.

....But one thing to remember, you can have some huge and good floating calipers and sometimes they are more reliable. The C5 /c6 corvette and e90 had floating fronts. Both weren't adequate for track use, but maybe good enough for rear duty.

Then again, M3 brakes have never been fully track ready..... carbon or steel. Just enough to barely get by.

Remember. Most M3s will never see a track. Those of us that do, know brakes will have to be addressed.
