"Driver Assisstance Restricted - Camera Vision"

Is it normal to receive the Driver Assisstance Restricted - Camera Vision when the weather conditions are poor?

I should start by saying I had a new windscreen in December and had the rain sensor and high beam assist failure where they had not sealed the windscreen sensor correctly. they put this right and the problem resolved.

This month I have had 3 occasions, all when driving on the motorway in poor weather - misty, rain, spray. The camera vision restricted message has appeared briefy - twice on the same 2 hour motorway jouney.

The car and windscreen are always kept clean and clear (there is no dirt on the screen covering the camera vison)

The issue has never occured in dry conditions.

Do I need to contact Autoglass again to get them to investigate or is it normal to get the error message on occasion, in poor weather?

It's normal in bad weather in my experience, I've had a it a few times in heavy rain or when there's lots of spray coming off the road.

Yep it’s normal - my G20 used to get a bit of condensation inside the camera housing when it was very cold and would throw up that error.

I experienced this just today. Can also happen when you are pointed directly into a low rising or setting sun.

In other news, I did notice the area around the camera defrosted itself last week. Selfish bugger should have done the full windscreen

Thanks all.

A resounding yes "that's normal" all round. It's put my mind at rest.

I was beginning to think, it was another phone call to Auto windscreens.

Mine does it in heavy rain, fog and snow..

BMW must think its a good idea to have a system that like to turn off safety systems such as "collision warning" when you actually need them, in poor visibility ... more crap BMW software design..

I think it’s just that cameras can’t see road limits and other vehicles when it’s dire weather. Not a lot that software can do about that. “Ye cannae change the laws of physics, Captain”.

What a daft comment - You'd rather the system didn't notify you when its "vision" is unavoidably compromised?

Glad you think so!

Safety systems are there for a reason, not to turn off when you actually do need them... but you must think thats a good idea!

It's a good idea to turn off if it cannot be relied on - as mentioned, the laws of of physics are unavoidable.
It's much like an ILS system in an aircraft - you need it when you're landing but if the system detects a mismatch or implausible situation it notifies the pilot and returns control to him. If you'd rather it carried on regardless, well...

As others have said it's one of the inherent problems with using a camera for certain safety features, you can try and compensate by adding further cameras but there are always going to be physical limits to such a system in bad weather conditions. It could be worse, at one point Tesla removed the radar system from all their cars and relied on cameras only but they have now gone back on that - https://electrek.co/2023/03/21/tesla...-self-driving/

Whilst I fully appreciate the comments in previous posts on this thread about the current crop of safety assistance systems in our cars these days being an extremely useful addition with regard to all aspects of road safety, my view is they are there to assist and nothing more apart from some intervention with braking and or steering. Surely though the onus first and foremost always remains with the driver in so far as to drive according to the conditions and within the bounds of safe progress?

The way we used to do back in the days before all these driver aids were even dreamed up?

Well exactly. They serve as a benefit and should be taken as such, especially when they're intelligent enough to also advise if their functionality may be compromised so that idiots don't blindly rely on them.
