SharkTank: Seeking $100k for 33% share in my G80 M3 front bumper business (joke)
Let's start a business that sells nicer front bumpers on Amazon.
Shipping will be a bit of a biotch due to the size but we'll just roll it into the price (maybe charge $100-$200 more to cover the cost). Also, 15% Amazon cut. Literally, take the F80 M3 bumper, modify it to work on the G80 body. We will make money hand over fist. Any takers? |

Like I said a few months back - if there's a market for it, then the aftermarket will be all over it. Unlike changing an engine or transmission or actual sheetmetal, this is something that should be easily handled.

There’s a certain stigma with changing an entire bumper on a brand new car, I wouldn’t want to do it personally, and the majority of aftermarket companies can’t even get a splitter or diffuser to fit correctly, let alone an entire front bumper.
If BMW can’t make a front end that’s even remotely nice, I’m out in full.

The problem with that stuff is, if not done well it can give you horrible data - for example the way things are worded or capturing people's aspirational behavior versus real behavior. An example would be you show people 5 mockups and ask them: * which design is more bold? That answer is going to differ from * which one of the 5 would you most consider buying ... and THAT answer is going to differ from * Given the choice between any of these 5 and this other one, which would you consider buying ... which will differ from * Given the choice between these 5, any other car, or staying with what you have, which would you most likely choose? I'm sure BMW does pretty well in the focus group department, however they would be far from the first company to fuck it up too So is this new design the result of large in-depth customer focus studies? I sure as hell hope so ... but they definitely didn't have anyone with my taste in that study. |

Any focus groups studies on this car likely performed in China. This car is designed to appeal to that market, not to us Westerners. China is a huge market for BMW, and is the fastest growing for them.

Per BMW insiders, Europe and North America was also part of the impetus for the changes.

I don't put much faith in focus groups. As GrussGott said, it's hit or miss. Asking a question and getting an answer without having to follow through with the answer/decision is pure speculation. The only true measure is do people buy it or not.

So don't blaming China for anything you think is in bad taste. This is BMW's new design language for the Western market. Large grilles have been happening all over the market for a long time now. |

Absolutely, the tasteless noveau rich Chinese comments has racist undertones and is just wrong here. Of all cars shy would BMW adorn the car carrying the number 4 with grilles aimed specifically at the Chinese market and stick the grilles full of little fours? BMW is busy overhauling a design language that gone stale as they’ve done in the past, simple as that.
