10 days in, no real update, and checking on the Connected app it seems that my car has been parked since the 14th. Still waiting on the valve cover gasket from Germany. Which I do not believe will address the issue, but BMW wants to take baby steps and try this first, then try something else if it continues to consume oil at this rate.

I have requested that they drop the transmission and check the rear main seal, check the coil packs to see if they have oil on them, and a few other things but it seems like they require the green light to do these things from BMW.

No oil on the ground, no oil in the engine bay, and no oil smell (burning or not).

No additional cooling pack as my car was purchased from the lot and not ordered, if I had ordered it I probably would have opted for this.

Hopefully the oil level sensor is the culprit.
Just got oil warning again this morning, car currently has 5600 miles. Second time now in less than 6k miles it needs another quart. Can't wait for the first oil change to see if that fixes this.

Hey guys,

I checked my oil through the menus with about 8K miles and it was at the minimum. Stopped at the dealer on the way to work. It seemed like a lot of new guys working there (BMW Gallery in Norwood, MA). Anyway, it took them awhile and they added a quart. I asked to see the oil after they added it and it was 5w 30. I checked the spec later and it should be 0w 20 or 0w 30.

One of the new guys came over and said: "That's not good, it should not need to add oil at 8000 miles". I said "That's why I'm leasing it!". And he said "Smart, let it be someone else's problem."

I had a 2013 550 (N63 motor) which burned more oil, about every 5k miles. My X5 with the N55 didn't burn any, or at least I never had to add any... Definitely drive the m340xi in a "spirited" fashion tho.

I think the oil weight has something to do with this. 0W-20 is straight up economy car oil and this B58 is tuned for high performance. So if you're pushing it hard, I don't think the oil is up to the task. I refilled my quart with the acceptable alternative 0W-30 under the assumption it is currently running 0W-20 from the factory and I will request 0W-30 during my next oil change. Maybe it will make a difference, maybe not, we'll see.

One thing I've started doing as a precaution is to not push it too hard until the engine is fully warmed up. This is not easy for a short commuter like myself.

I figured mine will required at least another quart before the first oil change. Therefore, I will keep a quart in the trunk for when that time comes.

Agreed, I will push for 0w 30 as well. It will be warmer when I get the oil changed here in the New England, so "30" should hold up better. I always wait for at least operating water temp to push car too hard, preferably oil temp, but it can be difficult.

Got my car back with a new valve cover gasket as a first "let's try this and see" step and a bonus of wrecked paint from the dealer's wash process, I was going to get a paint correction and ceramic already but that just got bumped up the priority list.

Time to put another 1000~ miles on it, I will update in a couple hundred miles.

I picked up my m340i from the dealer with around 1500 miles on it, as a loner car, pre tuned as well.

I've had to put 1 quart in around 3500 and just literally today around 5700

But I honestly drive this car HARD!!! Not all the rims but I for sure push it. Everyone I have asked have said it's just the car and it burns oil....

I also have been running 0-20 and I agree I'm going to switch over to 0-30 and see if that makes a difference

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and any advice from M340i owners will be much appreciated.

I am planning to go pick up a certified M340i tomorrow but now having second thoughts. I thought the "oil burning days are over" with the B58 engines. Please tell me so. Just within this thread, we have about 13 owners with issues with oil consumption.

With those of you who claim that isn't a problem with their BMW, would you let me know? If the oil consumption only happens once within the break-in period, I would like to know the owners that experienced this and had no more issues. Thank you for any input and advice you provide. I was so excited until I saw this thread.

I'm at just under 5000 miles and added half a liter to bring the oil level up to the full mark. I'm pretty sure that will hold me until my 6.1.20 servicing. Not too bad and I suspect that most owners aren't experiencing excessive oil consumption.

I agree, I assumed with the ever-growing stringent regulations on air pollution, a new car, especially a BMW, would run clean and not burn any reasonable amount of oil - and for the most part, that has been my experience, with all of my BMWs, including a Mini JCW.

However, specifically on the B58 TU version in the M340i, this vehicle sips on oil, when you step on it. If you're conservative and drive like the stereotypical old lady, you might not notice any accelerated oil usage but like, what's the point

Other that this possible perceived shortcoming, the vehicle is very potent and runs like a champ, so I wouldn't automatically write this off as a defect but more, by design, as a necessity under heavy operation.

So I wouldn't let this discourage your purchase decision; you still have a 4 years and 50,000 miles of insurance, should any major flaws surface.

Thank you for the replies! After a 30 minute test drive, I picked up a beautiful Mineral White Metallic with jet black wheels. The car is awesome! I checked the oil level and it is currently at max. I'll keep checking it and report back if I discover any issues with my oil level.

Just had my first low oil warning come up at 5k miles on my M340i. Seems to have lasted a little longer than some on the thread. I've had the Mission Performance Stage 2 tune on the car since around 1k miles and haven't had any issues at all.

Just topped it off with 1qt and the oil level read out at max after.

I would go for a 5w weight oil. 5w30 or 5w40, it has way less noack (oil consumption) and much better HTHS. (holds up better during high temperatures.)
The 0w20 is ok if youre granny your car to get FE but thats it.

Just got my first warning today too at 5K. Taking it into the dealer for them to deal with in the event there’s anything else wrong and will report back.

Got that alert at 3500 and again at 6500 miles. Took it to dealer to top off both times. They said completely normal especially with 0w-20.

Ftr I drive in Sport+ mode and run the B58 to redline every chance I get.

Low oil alert just went off (meaning, the car no longer thinks that it's low on oil) this morning. Based on the experiences of other folks on this forum, I plan to still take it in to have them look at the error code as well as do the oil change, as it seems like the first oil change is happening at or below 5K.

That's odd that yours went away without adding oil. Mine never does until I add the quart.
