2020 M340i vs 2020 M550i

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Now that the numbers are out, and the M340i is approaching $70K loaded and leasing for $900-1000 a month, one wonders what to get.

Is the M340i too close in price to the M550i at $80K and leasing for $1000-1100 a month (better residuals), especially with the 2020 model getting the 523hp V8?

M340i advantages
- Smaller, more nimble car
- Less weight
- Limited slip
- Could be ordered with rear wheel drive

M550i advantages
- A lot more horse power - that V8 is magic (approaching M5 category for $20K+ less)
- More room in the back
- More comfortable
- Did I mention 523hp?!

To sidetrack a bit - one could also get a nicely equipped new 2019 Porsche Macan S for that price - which I am told drives like a car. And no agonizing about the front grille

Getting back to the point - I guess the M340 will be much better than the M550 when it comes to fuel consumption. And I think it can possibly be well equipped at 65K by leaving out a couple of options. But your point about leasing definitely stands - they might not be far apart in monthly cost.

Still don't think this is apples to apples. A M550i loaded approaches 100k. Do you want a loaded M340i or a stripper M550i?

I would not call 550 a stripper - I just loaded it with the options I would get, which got me to 80K plus destination charge. It also made it comparable to m340 options (since ventilated seats are not available on 3 series)

I was wondering about the exact same question earlier today--one issue I see with your assumption is that you're using 2020 M550's pricing will be comparable to 2019's. It's also unknown whether 2020 M550 will have updated tech items such as Laserlight, iDrive 7, new instrument panel, etc.

You are absolutely correct. I'm just excited about that 523HP engine

Same here
Using the 2020 7 series as an example, one sees that the exterior gets updated grill and light treatment, while the interior only gets new instrument panel, while retaining the old switchgears for lights, HVAC, shift lever, etc. So I would expect the 2020 5 series to follow the same pattern.

I personally don't think it would go for $70k well equipped.

Go to BMWUSA.com and configure a X3 M40i, which is almost the same starting price as the RWD model M340i. After adding Executive and Premium packages it's still under $63k.

Skipping that you fudged the numbers a bit to tighten the optics on your argument (81.5 becomes 80 and m340 will likely not make it to 70 considering many of the performance options are standard that were optional extras on the previous 340 like the diff, mperformance suspension, upgraded exhaust)

Lease rate you are using is the pre-launch rate for the 330 there is confidence those will normalize as the g20 moves into regular production. (But fair is fair... they might not)

Noticed you didn't include the dynamic handling package (+3600)... handling Isnt your priority, where sporty handling is the M340 target demo. if your goal is a powerful luxury cruiser then I think BMW would gladly accept you moving 10k upmarket. If that is what you are looking for then it makes a lot of sense to move up the range

Different strokes for different folks, it's why they have a range of models.

I really think it comes down to whether you can live with the way the M550i drives. Based on the new 3 series reviews, it seems BMW is discovering their roots again and the new M340i will be both fast and fun, The M550i however was built before they rediscovered their mojo though. After test driving a M550i, and owning a 540i I would say the M550i is more fast but not really fun. Its a great car, but that M badge is a bit of trickery in my opinion, its really just a normal 5 series that so happens can hit 0-60 in under 4 seconds. The steering, excessive body roll and overall feel while driving is definitely more comfort oriented, while I think the M340i will be the one to get for enthusiasts. Neither car is a bad choice, I just think that they are two cars that are definitely aimed for 2 different audiences.

That's like my 540 price and that's not full loaded yet (full load 540 would be another 10k? Basically adding luxury seat/dynamic handling/one level upgrade from H&K sound)

Fair enough, but that's the M340i xDrive starting price. The automated driving stuff is useless to me so I wouldn't get it. So with most of the features the RWD version would be ~$65,000. I think you would be cross shopping with a 540i and not M550i.

M340 will never lease for $900-1000. It would make it non-competitive with S4 and 540. After the initial period of high demand I expect G20 the prices to be in the same range as F30 prices were. The market is just too competitive. S4 and C43 both lease round $750 per month. Tesla 3 is destroying 3 series sales. The only way for BMW lease prices to go now is down or out.

There is a $20k price delta, not $10k. So leases probably $700s vs $900s before tax.

I chose the M550i for the level of luxury it gives me that the 3 series can't challenge.

That's what it used to be and I was hoping for the same outcome but then i started building and pricing the options (see above). I was really surprise at the outcome - and that's the purpose of that thread.

If you build the M340 with all options to make it resemble 5 series - you are approaching 70K
You also can build M550 with few options to make it closer to 3 series and have it priced at 80.
That's how i would build the 550 and there are a lot of them build like that at BMW lots.
https://www.bmwpeabody.com/new/BMW/2...d0503e7db2.htm

So even if you take the M340 price that I arrived at $68, 785 and plug it in to leasehacker calculator. with MF at 0.00188 (buy rate for BMW) winch is tough to negotiate - more likely to get 0.00222) and 56-57% residual with 6% sales tax - you get $1,118
Even if you ger 3-4K discound - you are still at a $1000

https://leasehackr.com/calculator/

And I know of several people who are paying that now for their M550s
And 2020 M50 comes with 523HP

Lets hope there is more incentives and better residuals - I want to like M340 but not for a 1000 a month

How are you building M340i? The pricing guide is not available yet. You can't just assume 330i options/prices and add things up. There will be more standard included options in base price of M340i.
